The Emperor Seeks Beauty

An emperor called before him a sage who knew the beauty of God. The emperor said, “My duties are to me tiresome and ugly. Everyday I sit and hear the complaints of my subjects, one after another without end. You who know the beauty of God, give me something beautiful to make my life less wearisome.”
The sage replied, “Truly, beauty cannot be given, but here is my advice: Sit up straight, and give to every one your full and loving attention.”
At these words the emperor was most displeased, so that the sage had to flee the land. But when the emperor put the advice into action, he was amazed. He found welling up from within a power that turned all the world to gold. Thus he understood the words, “beauty cannot be given, ” for it can only be found within.
Author's Notes: Based on a traditional Zen story.

As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe in evidence. There is no evidence that deities and magic are "real" in the most literal sense, but they may yet be moving and powerful. These poems are a tribute to the inspiration of Pagan ways.
