The First Time

The First Time
The first time with my hands on a stranger
In the peaceful sanctuary that I had created as best I could
With borrowed music and rules about shoes and professionalism
In the chaos of the halls of learning that was my alma mater
Was both horrifying and transcendental, at least to me
Hopefully she did not have the same anticipation, frustration, and fears.
Silently reciting everything that I had learned,
The order and counted minutes that just HAD to be performed as if a counted Rosary
When my tentative fingers made first contact with my poor unsuspecting victim’s forehead;
There was a jolt of energy pass from the top of my head to the soles of my feet to those very
Fingertips that eradicated any pretenses and numbers that were jostling for importance
In the panicked disarray that was my mind.
Heat and light filled me and as I began to lose my squirrels
I felt an overwhelming calm take hold of my hands and the work of healing began.

Author's Notes: This recounts my first clinical experience in Massage School. I will admit that after 10 years in the Nursing field, I was still terrified.
