The Party

by Phoenix Heart
 Age Group: Adult

I wander the streets to a mansion of magnificence. I slowly climb the stairs and make my way to the front entrance. The crisp fresh air of this spring eve is so alluring thus with hesitancy I enter a beautiful house and am surrounded by glowing candles, iridescent ball gowns, and jet black tuxedos. Such ladies and gentlemen surround me, oh how proper they appear. Do they not realize I know each of them and feel ill at ease with their charades. I shake my head with the games they continue to play. The hatred fills me full. I roam the various rooms observing all the guests who behave as if I am a wisp of smoke formed by an after dinner cigar. I note the exquisite beauty the decor and clothing that are around me. Yet it appears there is no one here to remember me. A handful or so may glance at me and nod. Their faces pained in an attempt to recall my name. Others trying to bring to mind a place, a time we may have met. I fleer at all of those around me and continue strolling the great house. They do not notice my smiling eyes never betray the contempt I lovingly embrace. Ah, at last the great dining hall. A room so ostentatious once so unadulterated. Paintings, draperies, a table setting and more. My abhorrence rises like bile when one is sickened by some grotesque malformation of nature. No longer can I hide my malevolence at what they've done. Nonchalantly I ease toward the candles and drapes which line the elaborate hand painted wall. I am alone with not a living soul near my side. From the back of the great hall, I inhale, one, two, three, I languidly raise my right arm as a Prima Bellerina readies herself for the dance and ever so slightly rest my hand on the side of the first candle. My face smiles with an intense concentration of what I now must do. Gracefully I begin to walk placidly toward the front hall and create beautiful cascading effect of wax and flame. I am a painter creating on a canvas. I quietly retrieve my coat and float silently toward the door. No one noticed my simple little dance, my game. I open the grand door and the air enters caressing me once more. Gently I close the door ensuring no escape. Once this was my home and so it shall remain. I cover my head with my cloak as I casually drift to the street below. My abhorrence has subsided with what they all have done to me. The moon caresses me, the stars applaud me, and the street sparkles a pathway before me. I feel the regal queen this eve. Wafting through the air a slight aroma beckons me and reminds me. I linger back to a time not long ago when I embraced the flames. I smile once more with the light scent of burning wood filling the air. Now they will feel what they beget upon me!! Uproariously a laugh escapes what use to be my lips. My beauty burned away and a loving heart lost in what remained. Silently my carriage comes for me. The aromatic scent of flowers again captivates me. The beauty of the black plumes set atop the harnesses of the blackest of horses entices me their way. They will carry me far from here. This is now my home where I may finally rest. I wish and close my eyes again. My coach, my place to slowly waste away. How very nice to have been a guest though I must admit, the pleasure was all mine.
