The Sisters of the Fae

by Friendly Spirit

 Age Group: Adult

One night while I did wander From back yard to the woods beyond A strange feeling overcame me It felt both right and wrong.
I could hear the babbling brook The crickets in their song As I walked among the trees The pathway grew so long.
Not knowing what was happening I did quicken my pace Found myself running through the woods As my heart began to race
The air seemed somehow sweeter The trees they seemed to dance The brook somehow now talked to me I swear I felt Earth prance
Sounds and life were everywhere Even rocks did seem alive I swear I felt a dragon fly over me As a shadow went from left to right
The path that I was walking on No longer was where I stood For what was once my back yard Was now an enchanted wood
Through the dancing trees I raced Hearing giggling in the breeze Somehow, something was coming close As I fell down to my knees
There just did seem no way out Of this enchanted wood But now inside a clearing I got off my knees and stood
Suddenly all around me Everything was bright Which seemed especially strange to me It being the middle of the night
The trees had happy faces The plants they danced and sang Strange animals played peacefully Color from everywhere sprang
The water it was just so pure Life through it you could see The air so sweet, the light so bright It all surrounded me
Then suddenly a glowing light It came down from the sky Around it wisps of color flew Up, down, left and right
As I squinted at the moving lights The strangest things I’d clearly see In each glowing wisp of color A smiling Faery there would be
The large light in the middle Began taking a wondrous form A most beautiful apparition From the light was now being born
She was a wonder to behold As beautiful as beauty could be In her eyes galaxies spun As she smiled down on me
The apparition told me Without even a word this day “Be calm kind fellow for we are friends We’re the Sisters of the Fae”
“The sisters want to speak with you You who have not been well Behold the first now comes to speak And wisdom she will tell”
Then one plumper than the rest A teacher she seemed to be Hovered five feet off the ground With finger pointed at me
She looked at me with kind eyes That sparkled with all hues to see I knew somehow we’ve met before And a riddle she did tell me:
“I’m going to tell you something You knew before you got worse It’s you who started everything That you call your ‘Universe’ ”
“In the beginning you did decide to be And decided you could see And then you put things there to see So that a game for you there’d be”
“For when you looked from your place To the things you made to see My friend you didn’t know it then But space was created by thee”
“Then when you played with others Looking at what they too made You all forgot who made what And solid those forms became”
“And as you all interacted With changing solids based on lies Little friend don’t you see You all created time”
“Over time you all forgot You were not that what you’d be From one life to another You forgot more. Don’t you see?”
“The forms you took in many lives You oft did see them die That made you think that you too died But that is just a lie”
“You just need to remember You are not really small Time, solids, space and energy You did create them all”
I pondered on her riddle As she did disappear Somehow I knew when I figured it out Great wisdom was truly there.
Somehow I knew my barriers Were truly a silly shame And everything that restricted me Was there just to play a game.
Another Faery descended Her face was young yet old She seemed everything good A smile made of pure gold
She told me how to see them always “You use not human eyes You have to look beyond your mind Beyond the human lies.”
“You have to first see yourself As you really are A beautiful, simple spirit Who creates from near and far”
“I know that you have missed us We all have missed you too But to come home you can’t be body You simply must be you”
“For when you can rise above the lies Of space, solids and time And see what you really are You can see us any time”
Another came down, circling me Giggling all the way Said she was one who played with me Said she was Sister Play
She told me that three lifetimes ago When I sat with stuffed bear and cat She shared the tea party we all did have As we laughed at my funny hat
“I was with you on your daddy’s shoulders When with him you did play And laughed with you at nothing At all the magic we made”.
“When your young life was a game to you And you loved to simply play Remember it went on for years and years And we played and played all day”
“But you then refused to see me After you decided you were too old Though I was often by your side You forgot life was a game you mold”
She then had fits of giggles Saying she knows more we will play When I am ready to see her always Not just from day to day
She kissed me on my nose And smiled as she whispered to me “I know you’re really my sister” Then she flew off like a bee
I then looked over to my left The oddest thing I did see Another beautiful Faery Was conversing with a tree
To my right another Faery Wagging her finger up and down Was telling a remorseful dragon To “put that bunny down”
The dragon let the bunny go The Faery hopped up on his head And up into the skies they did soar Laughing with no words said
I noticed just ten feet ahead Around a small hill there did run The strangest bird-like creature One leg longer than the other one
I ran next to the creature Saying “kind sir who are you? And why is the right leg longer Then the left by a factor of two”
It gave me a funny look As if somehow I was on pills Said “I am Side Hill Goucher And these legs help me run on hills”
I asked it why it ran round and round In circles with no end sought It looked at me as if puzzled Then shrugged and said “why not?”
Just then another Faery She flew out from the wood And chatted to me rapidly Yet somehow I understood
With a voice between that of chipmunk And a high-pitch chirping bird Her voice was truly melodious Yet without one earth-based word.
She told me in her chirping voice So clearer than any word Said she was Sister Mischief And she’d show me how to get that bird.
She flew ahead of the running Goucher They laughed as it chased her quick Then she turned back quick the other way As Goucher fell for her big trick
But now with it’s long leg uphill And it’s smaller leg facing down Goucher tumbled down the hill over itself As Mischief laughed and flew all round
The befuddled Side Hill Goucher Said “Sister you got me good” Then changed back into a Faery Chasing Mischief through the wood
I saw their trails of sparkles As they both shot from here to there And even when they disappeared Their laugher I could still hear
Now much to my amazement I saw flying above me now The oddest bird you ever saw Flying backwards, I know not how.
I shouted to the flying bird “What, kind sir, is your name? And why do you fly backwards sir? That just seems so insane”
It looked down on me and smiled. Said “I’m ‘Bondalarry Bird’ now and then And I don’t care where I’m going I just care where I’ve been”.
I shouted up to the backwards bird Said “what deeper meaning is there In flying backwards up and down Over there and over here?”.
I faintly heard it’s answer As it disappeared from sight It said “stop seeking ‘deeper answers’ I just chose it this way tonight”.
“What’s here is here simply because We decided to play games Complexity is filled with lies Simplicity is where freedom reigns”.
The entire world around me Was full of joy and games Whenever Faeries flew close to the ground In their trails the flowers sprang
Everywhere there was dancing Everything was charmed No matter what form anyone took No one was ever harmed
Then another flew up to my ear Said she was Sister Song Said when as maiden I sang with rapture She carried on high my song
That time that I felt wonder At all the beauty that I saw Another Farey said she joined me then Told me she was Sister Awe
Sister Nature then babbled to me Saying “I was there when you did look I was talking to you everyday When I was babbling brook”
This all seemed to go on forever And yet no time was gone As sister after sister re-introduced herself Each filling me with her song
Then the radiant Beauty from on high Said no matter where I roam “You were once being one of us And one day you’ll be welcomed home”
Suddenly I could clearly tell That the Beauty still in sight Was signaling to all her sisters That the time was indeed now right
The Sisters came from everywhere From the skies, from brooks from trees Each Sister stopped what she was doing And rested on her knees
Each did raise her head on high Some briefly but some for long And from them what could now be heard Was the wondrous Faeries’ song
So beautiful were the melodies And everything you saw The tones, the pitch and all the sounds They truly defined “awe”
Somehow I knew the melodies From the Faeries’ song Were carrying dreams from worlds around Into the heavens where they belong
I laid back in the clearing As I did close my eyes And drifted with the Faery Song Knowing truth now instead of lies
But when I did now open my eyes The woods behind my house I did see Where once was Beauty and wisps of lights The full moon and stars there’d be
All now really seemed quite normal Except inside of me I now knew the Fae was always close Deep inside of me
I felt like I could hardly breathe All the joy I held inside Though all the trees stopped dancing I felt this love and magic inside
The sisters had reminded me Finding the path back home I can When I first can take responsibility For the spirit I really am
For the final steps of the path Are not walked with human feet Instead the wonderful path back home Is walked with spiritually and responsibility.
I will go and live for now And be the best I can do or say But I’ll never forget my visit With the Sisters of the Fae.
Author's Notes: Whether your home is filled with Faery song, or be in a great hall where noble beings celebrate endlessly with great horns of ale and continued contests without pain, or be it a home of quiet serenity or a gathering of forever happy loved ones, or whatever else you remember and/or dream, may you all indeed find your way back home.
And may your path home be filled with kindness, enlightenment and the spirit of play. And may that path home you pave be held together by the responsibility you take for knowing your true self, looking past the lies, to see just how incredible you really are. ) 0 (
I want to dedicate this to my father who passed on to another existence years ago. He told me wondrous stories of the “Side Hill Gouchers” and the “Bond-A- Larry” birds and much, much more.
