Pan and the Maiden

by Sparrowgael
 Age Group: Adult

Pan and the Maiden
He saw her dancing in the moonlight,
soft grass damp beneath her feet;
long hair swaying with her movement
to the drummer’s steady beat.
He saw the Goddess called within her;
he saw the Magick in her light.
He longed to join the dance beside her,
he longed to lie with her that night.
He gazed upon her striking beauty
bathed in moonlight’s silver glow,
Ah, but how could he let her see him?
How could he let her know?
She smiled coyly at his advances,
and tossed her hair back from her face,
and then was caught up with the dancers
as another took his place.
He was aware, in that one moment,
of the horns upon his brow
and of the fur upon his shoulders
so as he looked at her he vowed
that if she could not love him
just exactly as he stood
that he must find ways to convince her
and he promised that he would.
He thought of soft, engaging music
and of his lips upon her mouth;
he thought of endless hours of passion
enveloping them both.
But no sooner had he thought it
then the enchantment had been done;
with Ladon’s intervention
transformation had begun.
All at once, where had stood beauty,
on the ground by cloven hoove,
in a spot where none had placed it
lay a shephard’s reeded flute.
He retrieved it from the meadow,
cradled in his powerful hand,
and he screamed unto the heavens
his heartbroken reprimand.
Then to his lips he placed it;
a neglected lover’s kiss,
drew in breath as if to whisper
that he’d wanted more than this.
The syrinx answered with a soft,
resounding whisper of her own;
the Zephyr’s voice was now within her
and with Pan she’d found a home.
Now he keeps her with him always,
with her voice he charms the trees;
sends a message to the sparrow,
calls the gods upon the breeze.
In this form she’s always with him,
living for his gentle touch,
and she will stay with him forever
because she loves him very much.
