There Be Witches

There Be Witches
Jesus came to earth one day to see what he could see; he walked around and talked around then sat down next to me. He never asked for me to change the ways I’d had before him; for healing, birthing, harming none were all ways to adore him. But followers who came along years after he had passed resolved that things would have to change if their ways were to last. They baptized and converted us and ruined all our temples; then built up churches all around and started writing bibles. They demonized the deities for whom we’d lived and served and proclaimed that anonymity was all that they deserved. They defiled Aphrodite, made a mockery of Pan; they changed his name to Satan, their foresworn enemy of Man. They made their God a widower by murdering his Wife. They declared we must be Christian and forbade our way of life. When we defied their untried ways and clung to our traditions they proclaimed that we were heretics and condemned us to perdition! We did not understand the thought that we were somehow flawed, nor saw a clear distinction between ourselves and God. So they dragged us out into the streets, seized everything we had and told anyone who’d listen that we were evil, we were bad! They bastardized the things we did and called it Witches Glamour, then wrote a book to kill us by and called it Witches Hammer. We worshipped then in secrecy, we had no other choice; the fear of persecution had robbed us of our voice. For if we were caught they’d take us to that place of no return; and once they extracted their confessions they’d sentence us to burn. We taught our children to find Goddess in their Mary and their saints and we set ourselves to worship and we silenced our complaints. We hid ourselves among them, for there was no other way, and we’ve lived right there among them right through to this very day! We are bankers and we are teachers, we are sisters and brothers and friends; we are barbers and accountants... It's a list that never ends. We’re far more than you perceive us, so much more than just the hags that are printed on the outside of your trick-or-treaters bags. We are familiar with the lyrics of that tired, worn out song but we’ve survived to tell you that everything they said was wrong! So now we shout it from the rooftops, show it plain for all to see that there be Witches here among you and just the first of them is me.
