The Little Christmas Spider

by Sparrowgael
 Age Group: Adult

The Little Christmas Spider
“Please Mama, may we see it?” the Little Spider inquired as he hung up in the attic, not at all the least bit tired, with his brothers and his sisters hanging from the rafters high; he thought that he would ask again and give it one more try. “But the Widow, ” said his Mama as she spun her silken web, “has spent the day cleaning her house and just gone off to bed! “She sent us to the attic to keep our strands away; there cannot be a mess tonight, what would Santa say?” The Little Spider, undeterred, was desperate just to see why on earth the Widow thought to bring inside the house a tree! She stood it in the parlor and covered it in light; “I’m sure she wouldn’t mind, ” he thought, “and it will be alright!” He waited quietly in his cot and when Mama was asleep he silently climbed out of bed, afraid to make a peep. He crept down through the floorboards just to have a look; and there it stood so prettily beside the breakfast nook. At first he planned to only dangle from the ceiling beam but the Christmas tree was lovelier than anything he’d seen and the Little Spider just could not resist the urge to play on the branches and the baubles that were hung for Christmas day. He swung and leapt and climbed and crawled on everything in sight; and he was having so much fun he played for half the night! But when he stopped and looked around he began to feel afraid when he saw his webbing everywhere, oh! What a mess he’d made! He thought he’d make it right again if he just fixed it first but although he tried to clean it up, he only made things worse. Then he heard the sound of sleigh bells, at least he thought he did, so he climbed into an ornament and quietly he hid. And then a booming voice was heard, a joyous Ho! Ho! Ho! as Santa stepped out of the hearth all glistening with snow. And as his eye fell on the tree was heard to say, “What’s this?” The Little Spider thought that he’d be crossed off Santa’s list. But Santa thought the silken thread the perfect final touch; he smiled at the Little Spider, then thanked him very much. For such a gift of Nature is a blessing to behold so Santa praised the Little Spider, so courageous and so bold. And that is why at Christmas time it’s common now to see shimmering strands of silver tinsel hanging on the tree. J.Lorian Young ©2011 Adapted from a German Folktale
Author's Notes: This piece is adapted from German folklore. In some versions the "Widow" is cleaning her house awaiting the arrival of Santa; in others, she awaits the blessing of the Christ Child who turns the spun webbing to silver. I decided to tell it from the point of view of the Little Spider because he is, after all, the star of the story and because spider webs are beautiful without embellishment.
