The Most Ruthless Gift

To be a Wordsmith is the most ruthless of gifts.
Like unwrapping a box of scrap metal; tiny flecks of steel, that when put together in the correct order form the sharpest of blades.
Cold, steely, and cruelly beautiful in vanity and battle, both. Plied with a light touch, hands gently flitting across the keyboard, across the blade, they have the power to hypnotize, to persuade, even.
Brandished with the heavy hand of rage, they slice deep, draw blood.
But a weapon is only an extension of the hand that wields it. The words, like the razor, are only a tool.
The Smith is the weapon. It is She who inflicts the pain. The wounds heal themselves, a gift from Prometheus. Perhaps he knew the power the Poets held; and taking pity on his fellow humanity, sought to even the playing field.
Author's Notes: Just because we have the "gift" of being able to say exactly what we mean, does not mean we should always use it. We need to recognize that our words have the ability to hurt people, even if what we speak is the truth.
