One Last Poem

One Last Poem
I've come to terms with the fact,
that love isn't in the cards for me.
Today I smiled happily at my best
friend and his girlfriend as they
talked about having children together,
and I thought about you, about us.
There are always unfortunate
chains of circumstances that cause
us to take a step back and reevaluate
what's before us. Bad timing, hot
tempers, foolish pride, lousy choices,
an unforgiving past that leaves one
heartbroken. I think I set the wheels
in motion somehow, to have you back
away from me, without meaning to.
I'm sorry if I disappointed you, if I was
anything but perfect in your eyes that
brought you disillusionment,
but I was terrified. I come with a lot
of baggage and you don't deserve to
have to always be the understanding
one when I fail. I do miss the 'us' we
were at the beginning, before the curtains
were drawn to shut out the light.
Perhaps I've said too much. You would
rather not hear that I think willfully blind
when it comes to you even as I'm aware
of all your faults. I know this isn't very
bright of me and certainly not attractive,
and you'll probably despise me for my
weakness, if you don't already,
but I love you and I care enough to tell
you, not to convince you, but to have
you know you were worthy of it and special.
I know I tend to illicit the most passionate
responses from people, some good, some
bad, and that unnerves you.
I never cared if everyone stood together
against me, as long as you were by my side,
on my side, whether I was right, wrong
or indifferent. I won't say anymore because
I run the risk of crying out your name,
begging you to stay,
and where would the dignity in that be? I
would have loved to have been your wife,
to have given you a first marriage and
beautiful baby just as God commands,
but I can't even give you that. And so I'll
give you this,
I love you enough to let you go with no
hard feelings, wishing you all the best
that life has to offer in all respects. I will
always be in love with you because
somehow you became the love of my life,
even as you're no longer here.
