My Craft

by Catie Liz

Age Group: Adult

I cannot be confined by church pews
I never felt safe there
I found solace as a pagan
Nature is my sanctuary
My sage, my salt and my spirit.

Our bodies are said to have energies called souls
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed
Our energies are essential to our very beings
Making us pretty damn magical.
Energy transcends time and space
And everything ever created is nature
Nature is energy and energy is magick
So nature is magick
We are nature, we are magick.

Our palms tell us stories of all the lives we have to live
Prayers and spells are on the same platform
They are incantations of intent
Saying five Hail Mary’s while counting on a rosary
Is as valid as me making a potion with rosemary
My words carry weight
Every sentence is a spell
I scribble sigils to wish me well
I carry hamsa charms with me wherever I travel
To promote positivity.

The pilgrims escaped to a land proclaiming religious freedom
Only to wring the necks of those who were too free
The media makes a mockery of broomsticks and animal sacrifices
Demonizing voodoo and Santeria
Equating black magick with evil
While pilgrims forced them to convert and assimilate
Christians were killing them.

That is why we are witches
To protect ourselves from persecution
We are the second-class citizens
Who challenge the system that binds us.
I radiate magick
I am connected to the sun and the moon
The tapestry of my life is mine to weave
Witchcraft gives me the tools I need to take control of my life
My soul is celestial
My ancestors protect me
My craft commands respect
And if you think casting spells will send me to hell
Then I will see you there.
Baby, don’t make me hex you.
