The Creature

by Radko Vacek
 Age Group: Adult

In honor of the tragic genius of Edgar Allan Poe. I Once upon an evening dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over yesteryear, bygone faces and voices by the score-- While I dozed off, half-way dreaming, suddenly there came sounds, seeming Like paws stretched up tapping, tapping at my locked front door. "Must be some stray cat, " I grumbled, "scratching at my front door-- Yet another! nothing more." II Yes, well I do remember, that eve in dark and cool October. How I recalled the days of summer, their joys over! Verily I felt quite sad, remembering the beautiful things I had, Lost to the darkness like that evening, a grayness to confuse, Making goodness hard to see and choose, until we lose What we love most, forevermore! III Clearly I remember the vibes in the room (ones of doom, When things distinct as moon and sun Blur together as though they were one, Consciousness gets confused, and how easily we lose Blessed life, beloved friends, and the poor Lenore!) And the rapping, rapping, at my locked door. IV Outdoors was the eve of the hooting of the owl, Otherwise as quiet as the drifting of that fog, But the barking of the distant, little dog In my mind (confused and working spells!) seemed the howl Of a pack of wolves as I, startled to the core, Heard more rapping, rapping, at my locked door. V Picture me, a man so old, so alone (My hair standing on end!) almost turning into stone, My teeth chattering, my thoughts all scattered, Terrified of getting robbed and battered, To the verge of nearly crapping, By the rapping, rapping, at my bolted door! VI Worn out as I was, worried and weak, I gathered all my might by the window, just to peak! How bleak it was, an eve made just for home, The trees like apparitions--of bodies bare, to the bone! The sole living thing out was a bat, with its wings Beating, beating, close by my very door. VII Finally I exploded, giving out a shout, "What is all this infernal rapping all about! Oh please, fiend or friend, would you tell me who you are, Some odd being fallen from a star, Or some ghost to haunt me, forevermore?" Outside was silence. Nothing more. VIII That time of fear and wonder gives cause to pause and ponder: How one mere eve of autumn, dark and cool With fog covering like a veil, can well make fine wits fail, In wandering on the edge and falling like a fool-- In grave peril, either life or honor, Through again that rapping, rapping (aahhh!) , at my door. IX I put out the fire, hoping to retire To bed and to sweet dreams, but no! Instead, Horrid fantasies kept filling my weary head! "Is it some robber, " I thought, "or peddler who bothers Not with conscience (or some fiend of ancient lore!) That keeps rapping, (rapping!) , at my bolted door?" X Then profoundly I had thought, "Am I doing as I ought, Not to heed the rapping, a rap, perhaps, of need? Out of crazy confusion, in fear of rude intrusion, Am I being inhumane to some creature poor in pain?" For better or for worse, I did decide to open wide My once securely bolted door! XI The creature nearly stopped my heartbeat! It was small overall; three-feet-tall? Not even! But it seemed to be a giant bug, all pea green! With two antennae bobbing on its head, It demanded a treat, or a trick instead! (Sigh!) And why not? It was Halloween!
