To All the Things We've Loved
by Radko Vacek
Age Group: Adult
Too bad the rose doesn't blossom sooner!
We wait with painstaking patience on the bud,
Protected by the many thorns,
Surrounded by the drops of blood.
Too bad we aren't born
Knowing what we wish we had known,
Ready to do what we should have done!
But then, would the beauty of the bud have been abused?
Here's a toast, to all the things I've loved,
To all the things I've lost,
Not doing what I should have done.
But then, were they really mine to begin with?
Here's to the tears you shed,
Of love, for all the things you hold so dear,
For all the sounds not yours to hear,
Taken by time, echoing in your head.
Oh Proteus, younger god of the sea!
Unto you times to come never are strange,
You, with the shapes all yours to change!
Oh god, you are as changing
As the world of events you foresee!
Change is that thing which we mortals so fear,
Anticipating passings with sad tears,
And yet, like you, change is a divinely beautiful thing!
So, when the world we know is sundered all apart,
With us at its center, with a broken heart,
Let's remember, how beautifully the world rolls on!
The things we love never are all together gone.
Whatever his shape may be, god Proteus is one,
And over the sea shines yet another glorious dawn!
Let's share with everyone what we have learned,
And welcome the earth, changing as she turns.
