The Tree of Love

Age Group: Adult
One great poet wrote, "Nothing gold can stay."
But does the world truly happen that way?
Were those golden times real to begin with?
Are golden things the stuff of a bad myth?
Was there ever a Garden of pure joy,
Or some Great Deceiver come to destroy?
I also do doubt in a grove of grief
Without, here and there, a spryly dancing leaf!
Not having a paradise to regain
Could mean not having to fear endless pain.
Should we have an ethics rooted in fear
When it can sprout from compassionate tears?
I much believe that, from the day we're born,
We are destined to suffer many thorns;
But, through our errors, we grow discerning
Enough, sometimes, to satisfy yearnings.
