The Weak Link behind the Hard Life

by Radko Vacek
 Age Group: Adult

Odd as it seems, I love the time which falls From Samhain to Imbolc the most of all. In its darkness, there is no deception: The brighter days it promises shall come! The darkest link, through lasting legacies And enduring truths, is a way which frees. What enchanted times, when the hunting Cat Was the true blue friend of the hunted Rat! Cats befriended rats, and Time was our pal. How sad it is, that Golden Ages fall! For selfish reasons, lost are all the rhyme And the years, in a race turned against Time. That happened through the Emperor's contest For the animals: who could swim fastest? In the order which they swam the river Would their names to the twelve years be given. So that the animals would earn their pride, The race was in spring, with the river wide. In swimming, the Cat and the Rat were slow, But thinking fast, they rode the Buffalo. Now along the way, the Rat got tricky, Squeaking, "Look, old pal Cat! There's a fishy!" And as Tom Cat looked down, the Rat pushed him, While thinking, "Too bad, pal, but cats can swim!" To forfeit friendship just to win first place Surely made the Rat worthy of disgrace, But alas! the first of twelve years got named, Rat, rewarding him for his unfair game! Yes, spring, as the most dangerous season, Can tempt friends to break apart, with treason! The Rat got first honors, but at what cost: The magic of magnanimity, lost! The spring link is the most dangerous one In the Wheel of the Year. That warming sun! How it tricks the buds into opening! I try to warn them: think before you spring! But never does it work. It is too late To warn a world long in the hands of Fate. Not taking their time leaves little time left, With Hermes to direct the clever theft, Just as Demeter had searched the wide Earth, Turned silent and barren, void of all mirth, For Persephone, her maiden daughter. Just think of all that the Earth could offer And of all the spirit we could absorb! But now we are left with only the Orb Above, farther and largely obstructed, To keep ourselves able and spirited. So, as Mother Earth sought her daughter then, We now seek Mother Earth as her children. Yes, the darkest link is the best of all, Reflecting the magic before the fall!
Author's Notes: The references to Cat and Rat allude to the Pagan version of the legend of the naming of the years in the twelve-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac.
