Of Phaethon to those who had loved him:
The prisoners wake up to live
Yet another day in the cells
Of their bodies. We also are inmates.
Do we not spend much time being immured?
To me, this leaves great reason for mourning.
Rarely do we hear birds heralding the morning
As we face the day, just to be endured.
On the grass, beside the trees, I dreamed
Of this light shining in the wall,
Or shining through, in spite of all
The resistance from the matter,
Like the gray matter of my brain.
In my mind, or through, shines the light
Of just causes for sacrifice.
Was it just in my mind, my dream
To drive my father's chariot of light
Across the sky, just as he does?
Was it just a vain hope not meant for me,
Born of my limited mentality?
Or did the light shine through from truths beyond
The mental figments, from the realm of stars,
Eagles, and blue skies as they truly are?
Enchanted is the realm free of the walls,
Worthy of the sacrifice of my fall!
Do not mourn for me! I, who dared to drive,
Do not regret dying. Without causes
Of dreams pursued, who needs to stay alive?
When you look at my stone,
May you also see the light shining,
Not merely in, but more so through.
A life spent in the spirit
Of pursuing dreams
Leaves little room for gloom.
