A Pagan Epitaph

Behold these words, a Pagan epitaph!
They might move you to think, or just plain laugh:
They say, "Swans sing the most beautiful songs
When they are dying." Minute by minute,
I approach my end, but I am no swan,
Alas, and the song merely an old man's.
When my old bones at last get laid to rest,
Do not cry out to God, nor beat your chest.
My song has not been that great. Much went wrong.
It was out of tune, and I confused long!
Why should you cry over my Pagan lot,
And why forgive me? But please, forget not
The thirsty flowers nearby, nor the birds
Which fertilize the grass upon my grave.
Oh no, there will be scarce need for sorrow,
But the animals around will be dear.
They cause no trouble: honor the sparrow,
Which is not honored by one, single tear.
