The Subtle Goddess

In the woods, you have songbirds that chatter
Nearby in thickets, with quick, mixed noises.
You may get so enchanted by the cheer
That you miss, descending from the treetop,
The subtle notes, rising, pausing, falling,
Liquid, hauntingly remote, to your ear
Sounding in minor key, bringing to mind
The seasons for birth, death, and everything.
We do not want to think of those matters,
More long-term and often melancholy
Which the song of the thrushes bring to mind,
But those are the ones we need to ponder.
The objects of our fondest memories
May have the loveliest, joyful beauties.
Author's Notes: Einstein said that God is subtle, but not malicious. I think that we can say something similar about Mother Earth: She is the subtle Goddess; may we not miss her subtle song!
