Wants versus Needs

by Radko Vacek
 Age Group: Adult

"Often times we cannot have what we love." Name something that you most love. "Perfection. I would love to be the perfect person." Should we not clarify, in what way so? The way in which you are then determines What you are: perfectly moral, a saint? Or perfectly ridiculous, a fool For insisting on wanting perfection? "The ideal friend, just as my dogs have been, Is the perfection I would love to have. In man, rarely is that perfection found." "Best friend"! Is that another job title For dogs, one more service for slave wages? If you say yes, you have defined friendship In terms of the hopes of recipients Who hope to grow, using you as their means. Do you want to make this your career goal, To be perfectly enslaved, a sucker? Prospective employers want everything, Their ideal being giving back nothing: "Help Wanted - Friend, permanent, overtime The ideal candidate will work for free, Consider due only food and shelter, And know that working is the way to be My friend, no less than doctor or lawyer. The ideal candidate will have these skills: Being loyal to someone to the end, Risking your life, directing all your will To help someone whom you dare to defend, Befriending others when they want you to, But when they do not, leaving them alone, Without expecting apologies due, Knowing your own flaws and dropping the stone. To know you are imperfect, and show that, Most makes 'friend' the job for you to go at." Getting so little back, how can you hope To give someone the help needed to live? Help Needed - Friend, to the end, anytime I am a bit-of-everything stray mutt, That sure does need a friend to help me live! The shelter staff does great tending me, but I need the love a friend alone can give. The ideal candidate makes a good wage, Working fair hours of lasting employment, To cover the cost of care as I age, And to have some time left for merriment! The ideal candidate is wise enough To walk me on a leash, far from traffic, And take the time to learn not to do stuff That makes a merry dog's tale go tragic! If you can be my friend in these ways true, To the end I will be true to you too! In what way do you mean, "perfect", I ask Again: perfectly enslaved, their sucker, To think you are, "the friend", as they call you, Or perfectly loving, the ideal friend? That is the choice. You know which one to choose! Therefore, in your quest, do remember this: 'The dog' is not a shortened job title. It is not that we are paying dogs back; Dogs pay us back, for helping them to live. Never are dogs slaves, always free spirits, Unlike man, who does tricks for low wages.
