Sacred Ground

I wandered all day to sleep on the grass
By myself, but behold! There comes to pass
The vision among the profiles of trees.
With glasses, I would see too well to see,
Because making out every single leaf
Would turn magic into boredom and grief.
I see the image of a hare outlined
In the darkness and on my thinking mind.
In school we learn to think too well to think,
But tutored by our nature, we can link
The bits together into - enchantment!
Thus countless leaves of treetops have been bent
Mentally into the shape of this hare,
In bitter times, companion debonair!
There even is a gap right at the place
Where the eyes fit into the bunny face!
Behold, his head is slightly lifted up,
As if to watch the Goddess with her cup
Of ambrosia, overflowing the brim.
Maybe it was she who kindly gave him
Afterlife in the trees, as a spirit.
Am I on Sacred Ground, or quite near it?
All ground is sacred, and every stream blessed,
But woe is man! He thinks that he knows best!
