Thus Unfolds the Bud

Age Group: Adult
For every bud whose petals thus unfold,
And every beauty priceless to behold,
Sooner or later we must pay with cold.
What good deeds get done, what beauty is made
Without a price, sooner or later paid?
Autumn is a way to render undone
The scorching of that too abundant sun.
Toward evening, cicadas in the trees
Harbiger the dropping of the degrees,
Like sirens warning, as unexpected
As calls coming from the realm of the dead!
We cannot help but feel a nagging grief,
Recalling the fall of last autumn's leaf,
And yet this pertains to the same, old theme
Of needed limits set on the extremes.
Excess does cause suffering. Everything
Is not mine to have, but I love the spring
And the summer - the memories they bring!
