Empathy

Do you know the music? That upbeat tune
Repeated, like feet that keep on moving,
The type they play for customers on hold.
Changeless from day to day, it stays golden,
Even though the weather turns bitter cold.
That music is meant to keep us happy,
But it makes me sad with its illusions
That the beauties of yesterday still are.
This is not so on studying the stars.
From day to day, the music of the spheres
Changes, echoing changes in our hearts.
It takes on a minor key when the tears
Of sadness roll from our eyes, and major
When joy lifts our spirits until we soar!
The very Heavens echo how life goes,
Which gives joy even in times of sorrows.
As the dark night of the soul comes, be glad:
The Heavens sadden with what makes us sad.
