A Forgotten Way

What a challenge it is to make my way
Through the thicket, without a blade! A quest!
Not just avoiding thorns, I sense, as best
I can, Nature on this inviting day.
If it is late spring, I welcome a thrush
High above, with its haunting, ancient song.
But instead, I hear a crow calling much.
It sounds like fall will be hear before long.
This walking is hard on my aging feet;
I take a seat on this fallen wonder,
A slowly rotting log. here I ponder
Essential points that professors delete.
I used to walk a whole pack of dogs here!
Suddenly I felt uprooted, estranged
From everything, recently held most dear!
I feel like a spirit, yet still in range.
The bygone dogs, the love, the points of grief,
Hit their mark while I watch a sharp-tipped leaf,
Pointing to traces of great, hidden truths
Denied to the senses of foolish youths.
This way I make will not be remembered.
Good! They might grow wise from it, discovered!
In the mean time, let deer run as they may,
To leave no trace of this forgotten way.
