Life Has This Magical Side!

The magical side of life is well seen
In the humblest form that has ever been!
Once, after a rain, I watched an earthworm
(Several inches long!) have to discern,
It seems with a split personality!
Oozing its way along "the corridor",
Between the walls of concrete, as they are
In its giant world, to escape drowning,
It was moving toward me. Then it stopped,
Raising its head like it was sensing me!
It was between a rock and a hard place,
Let us say: behind it the earth all wet,
Ahead the worst thing it had ever met.
Then, lo and behold! The magic happened!
Its tail turned into its head, and its head
Into its tail, maybe due to the dread,
I so regret to say, of meeting me.
It started oozing back toward the point
From which it came. Yet, like a tugging dog,
The new tail kept trying to keep the lead,
Dragging its feet, turning first left, then right.
Then it happened, the most stunning of sights:
The new tail turning back into the head,
And the new head back into the tail! How?
Could it be that the earthworm had a brain
To guide it that way, perpendicular,
To escape its predicament? No way!
What that not magical? I hardly doubt.
If you would worship Mother Earth, then shout
Praises for Worm. It made Mother fertile!
