The Court Cards in Domestic Animals

Age Group: Adult
If a man's home is his castle,
Then his pet is his Page, and the pet's master
Is its King, and its mistress its Queen.
If one of its Monarchs has a charming "wand"
Of beef jerky to treat it, and a cup
Full of water for it, its tail is up
And wagging. If the pet gives them loyalty,
They might give it everything in return, as did Byron
To his dog: "Beauty without vanity,
Strength without insolence, courage without ferocity,
And all the virtues of man without his vices."
But love without money is not enough.
The pet with the tag of gold
Is like a well-stuffed animal to behold,
And one guarded by a Knight with a sword
Is one adorable, and therefore is adored.
But a pet guarded by a Knight with a stick
Has a guard hardly equipped to do the trick
Of keeping it safe and secure,
An "Oh boy! " situation for sure!
A pet with eyes like upside down cups
Begging out of hunger is poor
Indeed, in another "Oh boy! " situation.
A King with a sword of abuse,
And a Queen with a coin of neglect,
Whose dog is just a means to use
As a watchdog, clearly are "Oh boy !!"
But a panting Page without security
Hardly is an occasion for joy!
To help your pets go all the way,
It takes love, but also money,
Or else you do them injustice.
