In my Pagan Way

How some must hate the world to act this way!
Does some lesson redeem such suffering?
Is sacrifice the point of life? Some say
That God so loved the world to let His Son
Endure agonies for our redemption.
No poem is good enough to be worth
The expense of a tragedy. Mere words
Cannot be the means to redeem despair,
Nor is any creed that great, to warrant
The expense of man's insane cruelty.
Any religious creed is, after all,
Many mere words to express ideas,
Necessarily quite poorly expressed,
Because Divinity is infinite
While the limits of our minds are finite.
Therefore, let us not take any poem
And any religion quite so gravely
As to make it the tool of fanatics,
Nor make tragedy serve our dramatics.
Let us be still, in silent empathy.
