peep peep peep
by Radko Vacek
Age Group: Adult
"No more can I bring you even one worm,
My nestlings. Nevermore to beat my wing,
I drop dying. No longer can I fling
My feathers over you to keep you warm,
Nor shield you, my priceless ones, from the storm.
The marksman chose to shoot me down in Spring.
What anguish to hear you, hungry, peeping!
In vain you sound your terrified alarm."
The power to give is so sad to lose,
To let down dependents so needing you.
Yet the mother bird surely still would choose
To shelter nestlings all her own to love.
Loving has a worth over and above
The limits of what the guardian can do.
