Understanding Parents

Age Group: Adult
I don't agree with all they say
Or things they sometimes do
I don't agree with demands they make
Sometimes I have no clue
I hate when they control my life
For it is not their own
I hate when they are mad at me
They don't see how I've grown
I wonder if they sometimes think
That I am just like them
If I will make the same mistakes
Or if I'm some perfect gem
I never thought of seeing them
As ones who are just like me
And if they can atone their sins
By molding who I will be
Perhaps I should not be so hard
On ones who are concerned
For every thing that I have done
It seems through them I earned
And one day they will look at me
And see how much I've grown
One day I will not have them here
For I'll be on my own
And then who will I look up to
And then who will I trust
Perhaps I'll try to love them now
There's just no choice, I must
And in the living years I'll have
A guide or two to the end
Who once was my dictatorship
Who now seem like my friends
How odd it is now all these years
I am the living sequel
The ones I loved and hated too
Now treat me like an equal
And here I am with new mistakes
I've made since I have grown
I never knew the love was true
'Til I was on my own
Perhaps I have atoned their sins
And bled for their mistakes
Perhaps I suffered just like them
But honey, them's the breaks
Perhaps I'm angry with them now
And think they were unkind
But look at me, I wonder how
By myself my way to find
Perhaps they did a few things wrong
But now it's up to me
And still I wonder why so much
I wanted to be free
Perhaps it's them, or maybe not
We all are right and wrong
There's no one else who understands
My deepest heartfelt song
I don't agree with all they say
Or things they sometimes do
But now that I am on my own
I know their love was true
I guess it is now up to me
To use the wisdom I've guessed
I'm doing what they did for me,
Just trying to do my best.
