What the Fool Said
by Katessa Harkey
Age Group: Adult
The fool said, “Since Earth be everyone’s mother,
We come from one source and one song.
Each man is my brother, each woman my lover,
And so I will do them no wrong.”
The fool said, “Since I have seen many good men
Living well doing with or without
Material goods are not virtue or sin,
Merely things that we carry about.”
The fool said, “My family I love and adore
And forgive any grievance or hurt.
By all people I meet I should set the same store
For everyone has the same worth.”
The fool said, “We all look a bit like our kin,
And Nature, she hates seeing waste.
So my soul will go on once its out of my skin,
Be reborn as is suiting its taste.”
The fool said, “In rags or in finery’s art,
A man oft is misjudged my his look.
It could be the beggar is king in his heart
Or the emperor only a cook.”
The fool said “The eye that is closed to this world
Sees most with the truer of vision.”
They called him a liar, a loon, and a fraud,
And they locked him forthwith in their prison.
