Missed Opportunity

by Stewart Bitkoff
 Age Group: Adult

Missed Opportunity
Hidden, Turtle crouched behind his favorite rock waiting for breakfast to swim by. After a time, a tiny grey minnow swam along, but Turtle thought, ‘it’s too small for me to waste my time on. I’ll just be patient and wait until something bigger swims by.’
About mid-morning, along came a tadpole. Turtle considered, ‘I like tadpoles, but I love frogs even more. I’ll wait until the tadpole grows-up. Then I’ll really enjoy myself.’
Later in the morning, Turtle was getting a headache from being hungry and vowed, ‘no matter what, I’m going to take a bite out of the next thing to swim by and have my breakfast.’
About 20 minutes later along came a water bug. Turtle exclaimed, ‘Augh! A water bug! I hate water bugs. They’re so hard!” Before Turtle could change his mind, the water bug was gone.
Next Turtle looked up at the sun and saw it was almost noon. Then Turtle remembered he was on a diet and never ate lunch. So Turtle began swimming back to his burrow. The Lesson
In our story, Turtle has one reason after another why he doesn’t take action. In Turtle’s mind, individually, each opportunity is lacking something and by mid-day he comes-up empty.
Usually putting things off or procrastination is based upon some type of worry or anxiety; we are afraid to take action and in our mind justify the reasons.
Remember many times in life, it isn’t always a matter of what we do, but that we do something. Here if Turtle had taken some action, he wouldn’t have left hungry.
