Prayer: Heart As Mirror
by Stewart Bitkoff
Age Group: Adult
In spiritual learning, often it is not a matter of adding something but removing that which stands in your way. Our preconceived notions of what spiritual development looks like: is one such obstacle. Another is our attachment to the things of daily life and strong emotional reactions to both happy and troubling events.
What needs to be removed or pushed aside, temporarily, is our daily reaction and self-directed worldly consciousness. This awareness creates a ‘noise of sorts’ which blocks the inner knowing from coming forward; this awareness is necessary to function on this plane of reality.
While the traveler is learning to do this- still the outer world- another, inner process is at work. Through Grace of the Path, exercises, inner awakening, and love of the Light; the heart is growing strong and slowly trickling the Higher Knowledge into daily awareness.
In this way, one teacher described this 2 fold process.
The heart is like a Mirror used to reflect the Divine Light. Our job is to wipe away the dust of selfish living and let the heart reflect the Divine Light across our lives and out into the world.
In our meditation and prayers we were taught to visualize the Light coming from the higher world, across our hearts- which would in turn emanate and glow- and reflect it out across the world to those is need.
Through this alchemy we were changed.
Traveler: What of the Heart?
Master: The Heart dwells within the soul
And is the window
Through which we experience God.
It is the fountain
Through which the river flows
And is the mirror of God’ Love.
It is God’s Gift to each of us.
Easily perceive God’s wonders,
Remain hardened to God’s glory.
This mystery is God’s alone.
For the traveler, the heart is like the babe
Who yearns to be in the mother’s arms.
It is waiting to go home;
And when God Calls
The rejoicing begins.
