The Wheel Turns
by Stewart Bitkoff
Age Group: Adult
It has been years since I traveled to this barren and cold land, where the sun rarely shines. And when it does appear, for a brief period, it is more of a tease than a life giving caress to withering flowers.
The last time I was here, I was lost for a time and searching for the city road, and once I arrived: warmed myself by fires, joined in building commerce, married and raised a family, singing songs with different travelers. For a long day I stayed in this city place, and it was good: then one day, it was time to travel further.
So with the wind at my back and a loving companion, we headed west following the sun across the heavens. Now we are camped for the night and I cannot sleep. It is a long night: during this cold darkness yesterday’s demons fill my mind. The battle to slay these fierce undying creatures is without end, and to hide, I fear going to sleep. While sleep beckons, I know when I awake it will again be in that cold, barren place that I left years ago. This time, I am without map or compass and know not which direction to travel.
Yet part of me sings I have often been on this wheel and when it turns there is always joy, sorrow and comfort. Yes, I have traveled this way, many, many times and tomorrow promises lasting sunshine to chase the coldness away.
For now, I must sit watch, quiet these demons and wait for the Friend to appear. It is promised He/She will take our hand and lead us further along.
And as the wheel turns, this is the way it has always been: each must bend to the endless, often cold, movements of time.
