Sword and the Rose

I, the sword and she, the rose.
So, thusly starts this halting prose.
But how to word such complex thing
that when 'tis found hearts soar and sing?
Frail flower of blossoming relationship grows
with glance and word and passions throes
yet ere each day begins to break
my dreams of her haunt as I wake.
Throughout each day thoughts turn and stir
confusing me 'till I see her.
Then widening smile from ear to ear
creeps on my face as she draws near.
Yet, this bush has prickly thorns
that pierce my heart from all her scorns
with petaled-tongue sharp as any blade.
At those times, love seems to fade.
And I endure the genteel blows
for sake of love and all its woes
for I have found such precious flower
that tempers me with fiery power,
and with mettle and with might
I protect her honor both day and night
from all she considers foes,
her knight in armour, where ere she goes.
And I pay no heed to noisy crows
spreading gossip, hearsay, and heavens knows
what heartless chatter designed to slay
and cut love's flower from whence it lay
entwined around a heart of steel
smelted by such love so real.
Yea, I can not dispose
of such a love for still it grows
in heart and mind each passing day
and season's turning, to autumn's grey.
Ere the day turns into night
with winter's chill of death and fright,
still, steadfastly twined as our life slows,
I, the sword and she, the rose.
