The Ballade of John and Katherine
Age Group: Adult
Sir Hugh of Swinford did take to wife
the young maiden de Roet, Katherine.
But, Lady Katherine was deep in love
with another before she had wed him.
Life did seem hopeless, still
love doth have its ways
For Katherine and her heart's desire.
Though she was wedded
the rapture of her gaze
was held by one who would inspire.
Sir John was uncle to the King
and enamoured of young Lady Katherine,
but ever chivalrous, stayed his heart
as he was bethrothed to another.
Many long years that seemed endless slipped away
'till Hugh would pass from an affliction.
All the while Katherine's love could not be stayed
to leige lord and greatest addiction.
The Lady Katherine and Duke of Gaunt
were lovers before thay were married.
She bore him children and through this line
future soverigns of England were carried.
John's wife was finally taken by the plague
and freed the two lovers empassioned.
Late in their lifetime was Holy Union made
and thereby legitimacy fashioned.
