All I Want - A Teens Message for Adults

Age Group: Adult
You never seem to understand
What it is like for me
All day you make your plans
And rarely listen to me
All I want is respect
But some days I want to flee
For life can never be this correct
And at times you need to let me be
When I look at you
This is what I see,
A person who is hurting too
Your actions speak loud to me,
When at last the day is done
What should I do?
Hurt silently until I’m numb
And wonder how I’ll get through.
Author's Notes: It was a discussion I had with a young man of 14 that inspired this poem. He was saying he did not think adults ever listened to him or understood him. It reminded me of my own teen years and the hard time I had fitting within an adult world. Listening to your teens and at least trying to understand them is the first step of developing a terrific relationship with them.
I've recently revised this poem and I think it reads far better.
