Star on Earth

Meeting her at long last,
Finally seeing her face,
Touching her hand,
Knowing her beauty,
From which my name came.
For I got to meet her,
Anne McCaffrey!
Ah, sweet joy it was!
More than I can ever say
For words will never express,
All I feel
For that brightest moment.
How I wish my poor words,
Could truly tell it,
The Joy,
The Bliss,
The Rapture.
Now I must sound inane,
And prattling on in such a way.
She must get that all the time.
And I feel far too small,
Too inadequate, to match
Her words and creation.
She is a star,
One of the lights,
That guided my youth,
A time when I had nothing,
But the words she wrote,
And my poor music
To keep despair away.
Still I weep,
To think I finally saw her.
Spoke to her,
However briefly it was.
Those few instants,
I will treasure always.
For they showed me
The lights can be reached,
The goals can be attained,
And happiness does exist,
For one who barely knows it.
For I am Sharra,
Named for Anne’s creation.
Eerily looking like that woman,
With whom I share that name.
(Though I probably didn’t,
At least not well,
When actually before her creatrix.)
If ever she reads these words,
I pray she understands,
My absolute awe,
My consuming fascination
With her and her works.
Without her,
I would not be today.
Blessed is Anne McCaffrey,
In all ways I can think of.
Whatever Path she follows,
May the Stars light her way!
As she has lit mine.
And I hope
To one day see her again.
To mayhap speak
More succinctly and prettily
To her,
About all she has done,
And all she may yet do.
Indeed was Merrily Met,
Though not so very Merrily Part,
For such a short time.
But Blessed Be,
Gifted One!
Always you are in my heart!

Author's Notes: Yes, I actually got to meet Anne McCaffrey and her son Todd, at DragonCon in Atlanta just last weekend. Oh, I can't express how wonderful it was. I was hyper for hours, both before and after actually meeting her. It was amazing. And I had a blast!!!! I only hope those pictures I got come out!!!! *stresses* It'll really suck if they don't! Not only did I meet her, but I got to give her several of my minature origami dragons that I designed some years ago! My parents say she was thrilled with them, but I was so nervous, I was so truly afraid she'd hate them! I don't know. I can only hope she liked them! I still get jittery thinking about it... And anytime I look at one of the books she signed... How to describe the feeling that ocmes over me... I can't. I'll just have to make do with this paltry poem/prose... Oh well...
