Samhain

Age Group: Adult
It is nature's pause in the circle of life
A time of reflection for man and goodwife
The days growing shorter which bring a chill breeze
As evening leaves scatter as if with a sneeze.
The colors of daytime of red, brown, and gold
Give way to the twilight, the night, and the cold
And if clouds run swiftly, and weather be fair
The skies softly twinkle above the night air.
We gather to honor the lives that have passed
With reverent reflection the circle is cast
The harvest is in and the year has gone by
So this is the pause before snowflakes will fly.
The children are eager to go "trick or treat"
Outside jack-o-lanterns the trimmings complete
A red pomegranate the table adorns
Surrounded by oak leaves and golden acorns.
With candles and pumpkins and apples galore
The kitchen smells sweetly as never before
Black cats and black cauldrons, a whistle of bone
All welcome the season, the witch and the crone.
The moon in its courtyard reflects in the lake
With shimmering silver your breadth she will take
Selene or Diana, Hecate by name
They all mean the goddess, they all mean the same.
The spell has been cast now, in hand the athane
You know she will grant you release from your pain
She'll graciously guide you if your heart is clean
She'll bless you each season till next Halloween.
I promise to study the rede and the rule
Three hundred and sixty and six days at school
In twenty eleven the day will come when
A new life and new name will bring me Samhain.

This poem was written for Samhain 2010 to announce my year-and-a-day of study in anticipation of my dedication next Samhain.
