The Sea

Age Group: Adult
A jealous mistress is the sea
Of changing aspect, mood and light
Aloof and heedless running free
Beguiling lovers, day and night
With rhythmic waves she laps the strand
The sinuous shore she shapes and bends
Assaulting, moaning, at the land
On cliffs her passions she expends
The azure hue beneath the sun
In brilliant blue her edge defines
Where distant sailboats love to run
In halcyon days with graceful lines
And more than once in morning mist
Mysterious, quiet, steals my heart
Seductive half-light, softly kissed
Pretends disinterest as we part
The nights are special when we meet
Beneath a painted crescent moon
Her breath inviting, sultry-sweet
A date each year in May or June
My lady she’s a fickle friend
Who often mixes love with lust
Obsession blurs love in the end
Horizon’s edge, I dare not trust.

Author's Notes: I spent much of my life in places where I was near the sea or the ocean. The mystic attraction was inescapable. She saw my loves, heard my hopes, and granted my dreams. I will always love the sea, but I will also treat her with caution and respect.
