The Magick of Mirrors

by J. Sandy
 Age Group: Adult

The Magick of Mirrors
I looked into the mirror As though, perhaps, to see– Some fleeting hidden secret Which you had seen in me.
You’d told me I was special, You asked me to believe– You shared with me a vision Which I could not conceive.
In every single kindness Revealed in every deed– You spoke to me in silence, You understood my need.
You looked into my being And found the love within– While looking past the present Accepted where I’d been.
You found the time to tell me, Though words would often fail– Where flowers, hugs and kisses Uniquely breathe their tale.
Your smiling eyes engulfed me; Your presence made me weak– With looks and touch caressing The blush upon my cheek.
How did you ever do it? You found what I had lost– You found what I had hidden At such a fearful cost!
And still I kept resisting: “It’s you, not me. You see?”-- “You merely saw reflections Of things that couldn’t be!”
The light of day is blinding. The dust of life will stain– The awe and wonder lost now In every day’s refrain.
The goodness that you speak of, The gentleness inside– Are not supposed to show now Like children, they must hide.
In fact, I’m almost sure now, It’s all just a mistake– The one you seek is sleeping And never will awake.
A thousand years or so now, There used to be a time When summer days were boundless And mountains he would climb.
Those days were days of wonder When life and dreams were one; Of innocence and freedom Beneath a golden sun.
Those days are gone forever. How could they now return? How could you find within me The me for which I yearn?
I know it must be magick, Enchantment, if you please; You see so deep within me– Or maybe you just tease!
Within my thoughts sequestered I sought to find a clue; I could not find this person– The one you said you knew.
The things we’d done together; The parts that I had shared– Were simply pale reflections Of just how much you cared...
That’s when I saw the mirror, Its glint was blinding bright– And all at once I saw you Reflecting in its light;
The lovely apparitions So deep within my heart– The one you saw reflected Today, and from the start.
The answer struck as lightning Descending from above– The love and goodness in me Were you, when you gave love.
J. Sandy .
Author's Notes: We, and espcially our eyes and hearts, are mirrors to others. But the mirrors we are in life can hide, distort, or enhance the beauty we find in others. May the beauty of the Goddess inspire us to do the same as we mirror back the beauty of those around us.
