Autumn's Death

Autumn’s Death
On the pavement, gray, they scatter—
Frightened children of the fall,
Startled, dry, with rustle-clatter,
So unfolds the season’s pall.
‘Mid the fabric, running slowly
As if seeking its own berth,
Sleepy, creeps the water, spindly
Taking shelter in the earth.
Truant leaves, denuded trees—
Silent cries of bloodless slaughter,
Blue-gray clouds, icy breeze,
Sluggish poison flows the water.
Pallid sky whose weakened master
Goes to sleep each day too soon,
By his absence courts disaster
While compelled we hear this tune:
Rejoice you all!
Rejoice and fall!
Rejoice in hell—
The day has passed!
Yet he won’t tell—
The shadow’s cast.
The wizard’s power
Is here at last!
In the air, as if suspended
Hangs the veil of musty gray.
Echoes hollow—“Life is ended”
So concludes another day.
Sheepishly with one more glance
He bids farewell as he heads west;
Oblivious to the ghoulish dance
He seeks release—he must have rest.
On the pavement, gray, they scatter—
Castoff children of the fall,
With malicious rustle-clatter,
Darkness beckons to us all.

Author's Notes: I wrote this many years ago before I knew about Wiccan beliefs. I still feel it's power, and the message of the cycle or at least the part which leads up to Yule. What I missed was the positive aspects of re-birth and the hope of the new beginning. With a little more knowledge there are a few things I might change, but I feel that as it stands, it captures much of the traditional concerns and mysteries of the season.
