Twilight, Etherial

Twilight, Ethereal
Now the evening’s dusk is gone as the crickets sing,
While the world suspended stands in her magick spell—
For enchantment reigns once more, over everything
And a feeling grows inside, which I know so well!
Feel the flower-scented breath of the evening air;
Rose and trellis patchwork lace, frame the porch in lath—
Distant echoes full of glee, hear the country fair;
While the world of shadows grows by the garden path.
Sparkled siv’ry dust above, on a velvet sky—
Wink and blush in pallid light—cotton candy moon.
Carefree easy summer days wrapped around a sigh;
Fairytales of yesteryear, passing all too soon!
Upstairs on the quilted bed sleeps an old rag doll;
Many summers all gone by leaving youth behind—
Still the sounds of laughter ring from an empty wall
Beckoning through tingled sparks, urgent rush to find.
Whispered mood whose sweet refrain filled a night in June,
Bridging space and time at once to the very soul—
Weave your tale for me again, animating rune:
“Heady fragrance, human touch, through these we are whole.”

Author's Notes: I wrote this poem some years back, based on actual experience. I find that just as a scent, a taste, or a piece of music can remind us of a past point in time and the emotions associated with it, so too can poetry. This is one reason why I treasure the mystery and power of poetry. This was written on an early summer evening with the moon nearly full, a few whispy clouds, and handfuls of stars scattered about. The place was indeed rural, with a wonderful garden and porch.
