The Missfit

The Missfit
It must have been October
while walking in the park
the last rays painting colors
a prelude to the dark
beside the well-kept hedgerows
ablaze with their delight
where walks by green expanses
meandered out of sight
I spotted on the pathway
reminders of a face
a gentle little flower
all soft and out of place.
The path was gently winding
from trees down to the lake
the route was quite familiar
one I would often take
but there was something diff'rent
as I bent down to see
the tiny little flower
which fate had shown to me--
its smile defying autumn
a truant little boy
with radiant face of laughter
to fill the heat with joy.
Its brothers and its sisters
had traveled on ahead
no cheerful summer antics
they all had gone to bed
or maybe they were hiding--
(a game of hide-and-seek)
and told the little flower
"just count but do not peek!"
And so the little flower
alone in the big park
knew not the shadows growing
would merge into the dark.
And then my arm was stretching
as I was reaching down
My mind commanded: "rescue
this friendly little clown"
when out among the shadows
I heard the flower cry
"I do not want to go yet
oh please, I want to try--
I'm searching for my brothers
they all came out to play,
and though the summer's gone now
I only have today!"
I thought about the shadows,
the fading of the light
and who I was protecting
against the coming night
"Desist, do not be selfish!"
a voice within my heart
was pleading for the flower
and urging me to part.
It must have been October
my heart was light and gay
I left the park still smiling
but why? I can not say.

Author's Notes: Sometimes we each can feel a little bit like that flower. In choosing not to harm a simple little flower, we can learn a lesson which speaks to our relationships with other people.
