Abandon

Abandon
“You are too intense” she said.
As if the volume of emotions
Was not the self, but a choice.
I should have listened to the one
Who believed and proclaimed
That others too could tame and
Modulate feelings to suit circumstance.
I was baffled. I was amazed.
After reams of cards and letters
Which I devoured with heady abandon,
Passionate words and deeds,
And life-altering choices,
Perplexed by the message of this moment,
I concluded—no matter—
My love is great enough for two, if needed.
If she was shy, I had enough for us both.
I did not listen clearly.
I could not conceive it.
And with the passage of months and seasons,
Daily work, new jobs and children,
I kept my emotions from excessive expression
Always loving, giving, with gentle composure.
Only my eyes betrayed the unfathomable depth within.
And the melody of life and love became
An exquisite dance which daily stole my heart
With routine extraordinary closeness and exposure
Until one day I realized that
I was dancing not with her but with my love
Alone, with my shadow.
