Hearts and Minds

Hearts and Minds
The clock keeps ticking up on the wall.
The time is slipping, and still no call!
A lover's torture, awaiting word.
To any other, a play absurd!
Who else suspending action
Will sit without reaction
While thinking, waiting, hoping
Impatient, barely coping?
The source of fascination
So near infatuation
A phone which is not ringing
Its message still not bringing!
And so the clock empowers,
While counting down the hours,
The steady lonely beating
Of lover's heart entreating.
The heart, they say, grows fonder
With absence--such a wonder!
Imagination wanders--
The mind the absence ponders:
Scenarios when he kissed her,
Compared to when he missed her
Engender mental mischief
And questions such as: "What if?"
Alarmed and losing all tact,
Forgetting that it's not fact,
The lover tilts at windmills
While fear of loss the mind fills.
The clock has lost the battle
The thoughts now simply addle
Reality's gone missing--
A sound: "The phone is ringing!"
"Hello, is this the bait shop?"
The lover's mind now must stop!
"You dialed the wrong number."
Says, waking from a slumber.
The heart takes over once more
As love comes thru the front door
"I hope you didn't wait long!"
He's glad to know he was wrong.
The story is now over
The lovers are in clover
But you must now discover
Your heart, not mind's the lover!
