Darkness into Moonlight

by J. Sandy
 Age Group: Adult

Darkness into Moonlight
My life had all but ended Surrounded by the night Where lost and frightened creatures Who sought like I to find In land of hidden features Withholding peace of mind Where fear and shadows blended In never ending fright.
We called out to each other We had no way to know A sister or a brother If tears would only flow. The night was filled with voices Proclaiming answers meek Dissolving into noises All phantoms of the weak.
One claimed to be a leader In darkness he could see Though others felt him teeter While walking in his lee. He claimed he was the master Obedience his demand In darkness lay disaster As hand held on to hand.
Amid the shadows passes A glow at first so faint Unseen by all the masses Still focused on the saint And as the glow now brightens I hear excited cries To some it merely frightens A startling surprise.
"Oh master, see the light!" "Deliverance is near!" A radiance in the night Might chase away all fear. "The light is just illusion" Retorts the puffed up man "You've reached the wrong conclusion, " "Now follow me if you can!"
A few of us discover To lead he's still disposed And yet cries out another: "The master's eyes are closed!" "My faith is all that guides me" He says, "I thought you knew!" "With eyes still closed I will see The path to all that's true."
Obediently some follow The master's clarion call While walking to a hollow Into the hole they fall. Despite the light, the habit Proves much too hard to end The hollow they'll inhabit Where reason will not bend.
With silhouettes and light beams Enchantment fills the night As if through cracks the moon gleams Ascending in its flight. With open eyes we know how To find the path so bright Among the trees we go now Toward the silver light.
We each received an answer We each found our own way The fear had been our cancer Which brightness took away. And as we found Our Lady We found the way to trust The dark we find just may be All strewn with silver dust.

Author's Notes: This is both a story of my own path, and a devotional work. Sometimes we are afraid to look, take a chance on our own intuitions, and follow the path in which our hearts are drawn. Now that I am in that moonlit forest I simply wish to say "thank you." May your path take you to the light of Our Lady, regardless of the directions you must travel. Blessed Be!
