This Child in Me
by Sister Eve
Age Group: Adult
She's four feet tall
with wide, scared eyes
and shaking knees
ready to bolt at the hint
of a harsh tone or a bright truth
She steals the last cookie in the jar
and she comes to Circle with dirty feet.
I used to hear her scream and moan
when I'd tend bodies who's
chaotic heartbeats sang of the imminent
journey to the Summer land.
I'd rock her and hold her close
and keep doing what I had to do.
Or when I'd give or had taken
this body for bad reasons...
we comforted each other, then.
When she feels safe though,
she'll dance and skip
in sun shine or moon
to the song of whiporwhil,
owl, or coyote.
She rolls in the morning dew
and howls with the dogs
when they hear a siren.
My little Sloth Woman...
we peek at each other
in mirrors sometimes.
I see her bright eyes
and she sees my lined,
grey-halo-ed mask.
She grows up-
as I grow old.
