Where Did You Get Your Magickal Name?

The tradition of taking on a magickal name is an old one in many Pagan paths. Once used to protect themselves and their covenmates or to create equality among members, magickal names are now often individually chosen to reflect or project certain traits, pantheonic allegiances or just because it sounds cool. How did YOU get your magickal name? What is the story behind it, the meaning of it and the reason that it was either given to you or you chose it?

| Merry Meet, All! My Magikal Name Is Whitefeather, And Yes, It Does... | Feb 11th. at 8:31:10 pm EST |

| Whitefeather (Soo, Ontario, Ontario CA) | Age: 16 - Email |

Merry Meet, all!
My magikal name is Whitefeather, and yes, it does reflect a lot about my personality, how I think and feel and who I want to be. I came by this name while walking in the woods behind my home. I was thinking about my Craft name, how I wanted to find it. I paused for a moment beneath a birchtree, and looked around, seeking inspiration. I looked down, and saw a small white feather at my feet, between my feet. I bent down, picked it up, and said "Whitefeather." I rolled off my tongue like my real name does. I fits me perfectly. I am (or at least like to think) that I am relativley pure at heart, thus the white part. White is also the reflection of all colours, and I'd like to think that I can reflect negative energies and thoughts away from me. Feather is nice, because for as long as I can remember, it has been my absolute greatest wish to fly. Like a bird, free and happy. Also, the feather, light and moving over the air as it will, is like my state of mind. It flutters where it may, and gives me fantastic daydreams. Also, it's hard for me to make up my mind, (flighty)unless I have a lot of time to think.
So, that's the history behind my magikal name. I wear it with pride. Blessings and Light! Whitefeather

| The Portion Of My Name That I Go By Publicly, I Chose... | Feb 11th. at 9:57:43 pm EST |

| Weaver (Norfolk, Virginia US) | Age: 27 - Email |

The portion of my name that I go by publicly, I chose using numerology. My name number is two, so I wanted a name that added up to the same. It took a while. I thought about what I am to myself, and what I am to the people around me. I considered my animal spirit. I also considered my given name, Ignacio, meaning firey. It's very special to me.
I ended up calculating all the possible options and dumping the ones that didn't add up. I don't remember exactly, but I ended up with two possibilites. Weaver was important, because of my association with Spider, my animal spirit, so Weaver it was.
I then considered a name that I could use professionally. I wanted it to have a "full" name feel, a first and last name. I didn't feel that one name alone could carry the personal energy I wanted to convey. I didn't have to look far before I decided that my own first name was perfect for me. It did need something, so I chose the Latin form, Ignatious. Taking a double dose of fire, I then added Fire to my chosen name, giving me Ignatious Fireweaver. This name has served me well over the past few years, and I think it may be the one that will carry me through this lifetime.

| Beth Buckley (Orlando, Florida US) | Age: 37 - Email |

Hi...I am DarkStar I chose my name about 20 years ago. Basically I picked this one because I liked the idea of balance between light and dark, but the actual name came from a song by Crosby, Stills and Nash...if you are old enough to remember them, and the song, the words are really good!!! | My Magickal Name Is Willowsong. I Chose This Name Because I Have... | Feb 11th. at 10:50:16 pm EST |

| WillowSong (St. Augustine, Florida US) | Age: 20 - Email |

My magickal name is WillowSong.
I chose this name because i have always loved the willow tree, it is peaceful and scerene. I want to be strong and peaceful like the willow tree, i want to give calm and peace to those around me. "Song" was chosen to acompany "willow" because I feel that my life is a song. It has it's ups and downs and while seeming a certain way while the moment is experienced, when looking back it is different. It has a message, a meaning, a story. Life has its own story to tell, and hopefully my life will speak to me and to others as a song does. I also love music. It's a part of my soul, an extension of myself. I always have a song in my head and music is a huge part of my life. I feel that music expresses me better than i could ever express myself. This is why my magickal name is WillowSong.

| My "magical" Name Is One Of My Screen Names, And Has Been... | Feb 12th. at 1:00:51 am EST |

| Earthwind (Columbia, South Carolina US) | Age: 42 |

My "magical" name is one of my screen names, and has been since '92. My name came to be through private meditation. I meditated and saw my self firmly planted on top of a hill while the skies were reeking havoc around me. I loved the feeling of being grounded in the midst of natural chaotic forces unleashing great amounts of energy: wind, rain, lightening and thunder.
In 1992 I had never heard of a religion called "Wicca". My days of playing with magick (seances, etc.) were decades past. Yet in that moment of time, when I desired a screen name of personal meaning, something nature-based was the result.
I continue to use the name online. At some point in the process of my Wiccan learning journey, I may find a different and truer magickal name. But for now, I am Earthwind. I have been for years, and it feels true.

| My Magikal Name Is Mew. I Now Realize That We All Go... | Feb 12th. at 2:07:43 am EST |

| Shiralee Beck (Knob Noster, Missouri US) | Age: 35 |

My magikal name is Mew. I now realize that we all go through a great deal of stress while we look for a magikal name, but I was alone when I found that there was a name for the way I looked at the world and it was witch. I have actively rescued cats for 17 years and had 17 in the house at the time, from four litters of stray cats. They were all sick and many visits to the vet did not seem to help. I finally cast my first circle to the goddess and gave an offering of oils and a pure white candle for assistance in returning the kittens to health. As I was meditating that night, my familiar, my first rescued cat, sat by my head and in my mind I could understand her perfectly telling me that my name was Mew. I wanted to know what this meant in english and she said that she sees me as a kitten on my spiritual path, thus she calls me Mew. I have since been warned never to ask a feline familiar a serious question for they have quite a sense of humor!

| Personally, I See No Need For A Magical Name. I Don't Make... | Feb 12th. at 5:25:44 am EST |

| Skye Cat (Edinburgh, Scotland UK) | Age: 27 - Email |

Personally, I see no need for a magical name. I don't make a distinction between my "Witchy" self and my "normal" self in my daily life. To me they are one and the same, so I don't need a special name to separate the two.
My net name comes from an ornament that hangs from my lounge ceiling.

| My Craft Name Is Raindancer... Witchcraft Is A Great Deal About Empowering... | Feb 12th. at 5:45:44 am EST |

| Raindancer (Christchurch, New Zealand) | Age: 52 - Email |

My Craft name is Raindancer... Witchcraft is a great deal about empowering, and as my given name is one that my parents chose, this was a name that I chose. I thought of the Sioux way of naming after something special you do, and although its not strictly in the Sioux way, its the same idea, and its my way. Why Raindancer? Maybe a poem I wrote would explain it best.
The Kiss
Cloudy nightfall is finally come, a grey sky is turning black. The noisy street is quiet now, the busy people all put away. I sit alone by my silent window, my Daytime Life now put to rest. The thick night is hushed now, nothing... not even a whisper... its waiting... waiting... waiting... I know this... I feel it... waiting... I feel it, although I can't say why. There's something coming closer, somewhere deep in a blackening sky. Then I hear it.... one tiny sound.... then another... another... a few.. more.. many.. I know this sound... yes... it opens up my secret heart. It lets the hidden child out, the eternal dancer in my soul. Quickly... excited... I hurry... I want to see that it is so. I strip off my grownup camoflage, I leave it there upon my floor. The flame leaps out beyond the flesh, it brightly burns to light the dark. Arms outstretched, I embrace the night, In naked bliss, I kiss the rain.
Thats why Raindancer Blessed Be Raindancer

| Lizz (Liverpool, New York US) | Age: 16 - Email |

My magick name is hardly something "to hide behind!" I luve my magick name and there is a very good reason I have it. I developed it after meeting my spirit guides and a quite an interesting astreal dream. If you want to read it though, please visit my website because it's a long story! Http://www.angelfire.com/va2/NightTiger/Essays/name.html However I do know that some people choose them to be cool, but honestly I think if people wait long enough the Lord and Lady will tell you a better name or agree that it's the best suited. I use it a lot for people online because I meet teens almost every day who honestly want information, but I don't trust sending my real name out on the web. Also it's a way for people to recognize me no matter the chat board, Pagan Perspective, or essay i've written. I've had my magickal name for over two and a half years now, and I'm tellin ya I have changed so much from it. It's given me a whole new sense of self as well as drawn me closer to my religion. Maybe it's just me, but that's how I see it. Bright Blessings Night's Aqua Tiger

| My Craft Name Is Artemis Moonshadow, Personally I Think There's No Real... | Feb 12th. at 9:07:30 am EST |

| Artemis Moonshadow (Kfar Saba Israel, Israel) | Age: 15 - Email |

My Craft name is Artemis Moonshadow, personally I think there's no real need for a Craft name but this name just popped one day intomy head and wouldn'y leave. When I started studying the Craft a year ago, I read a lot about Craft names, what the most common are, why we use them ect. If we're going to go techniachal it took me about three months to find my name, in actuality, I searched for a month and realised the Gods would just tell me when it was ready, so I stopped and for two months I just read about the Craft. One day in late spring I was taking a shower (one of the best I've ever taken BTW) when I finished and dried myself off, I noticed the cresent moon outside the bathroom window and a tiny star next to it, I watched it for while and thought of Artemis, a cresent moon always remind me of her bow, them there was a small wind and I saw a thin cloud move over the moon, making the moon look like a shadow. I felt like I had been slapped. Finally the Gods sent me a message, I was also honoured that Artemis was letting me use her name, she's one scary Lady. So that's how I got the name Artemis Moonshadow, don't search to hard it's usually in plain sight (when you realise what you're seeing)

| In The Tradition To Which I Was Dedicated, Protocol Usually Dictates That... | Feb 12th. at 10:28:27 am EST |

| Marea (Niagara Falls, Ontario CA) | Age: 30 - Email |

In the tradition to which I was dedicated, protocol usually dictates that the priest and/or priestess performing the dedication choose a magical name for the dedicant, however exceptions can be made. I guess I would have to be that exception, stubborn as I am!
Years before I ever stumbled across Craft, two things of great import happened in my life. One was an intense spiritual awakening while walking Cavendish Beach in Prince Edward Island which forever left me bonded to the sea as a source for the divine. The second was a 13 year old girl's daydream of what to name her future children. I settled on "Emily Marea" for a girl's name, meaning "Light of the Sea", since Marea is a derivation of Miriam, "Mistress of the Sea".
The name Marea stuck with me and continued to reverberate in my brain for years. When the time came for me to dedicate to life as a pagan - thinking back to that original experience at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean when I felt the presence of the Goddess for the first time, there was only one name I could take.
Bright Blessings,
