Question of the Week: 85 - 11/17/2002 What’s Your Motivation? What motivates you? What is the guiding principle(s) by which you steer your course? The Rede? Freedom and Justice for All? Honor? Kindness? Truth? Have you ever had to wrestle with conflicting impulses or actions that may be contrary to what you hold to be your guide? How did you resolve it? Is there a quotation (or quotations) that best sums up the ideals that you try to live up to or that is your inspiration? Please share it! |

I would have to say my biggest guiding principles are truth and this little poem(anyone recognize it? *grin*): Bide the Wiccan Rede ye must, In perfect love and perfect trust. Eight words and Wiccan Rede fufill: An ye harm non, do what thou wilt. Lest in self-defense it be, Ever mind the Rule of Three. Follow this with mind and heart, and merry ye meet, and merry ye part. I worked out what I personally go by a long time ago, so I do not struggle against myself but do what I feel is right. I have been fair and honest and it works for me. As for a quote... I would have to agree that the Wiccan Rede is what I try to follow. In perfect Love and Perfect trust. I live my life being the best that I can be. I "try" to be open, honest and caring to to each person I meet. I have learnt to love and accept myself and just trust that the path I am on and the choices I am making are the right ones. When a choice has to be made which may conflict with my beliefs I trust my instinces. A quotation I firmly believe in "Be careful what you ask for - - You just may get it" I |

I try to live by the Rede....the rule of three. It's not always easy these days to see the best in other people but I make that a real focus and keep in mind my favorite quote as a motivation-- "In dreams begin responsiblities." Blessed Be- Sharon |

When I was a teenager (with a big attitude), long before I was familiar with the Rede, my dad posted this in the house and made me memorize it. I still try to live by it and will teach it to my daughter when she's old enough. Here it is: Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly & clearly; and listen to others, even the dull & ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud & aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain & bitter; for always there will be greater & lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achivements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your career, however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; Many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity & disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the councel of the years, gracefully surrending the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees & the stars; You have a right to be here, and whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with god, whatever you conceive him *(or her)* to be, and whatever your labors & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. I was going to break this into paragraphs, but it's printed this way. Maybe because it takes effort to read it. It is said that some old dude in jail wrote this. I don't know. I've never seen a signed copy. I would say that not only does the Rede motivate me, but so has my past & past experiences. My past was filled with alot of darkness due to several different things (abuse, drugs, alcohol, lies, etc.). My life is now filled with alot of light & joy since regaining my footage on the path. The experiences today are alot better than yesterday. One of my favorite quotes is: "Only the true at heart are worthy." |

I would have to say my motivations tend to be pretty simple when I am faced with a dilema. I simply ask myself how this action will effect the Balance. To be trying to keep everything balanced is all. I feel that there has to be evil to be able to appreciate the good.. there must be both male and female, light and dark.. The guiding principles of my life come, first and foremost, from Nature. Observing how Nature operates, learning many spiritual lessons from animal teachers and my spirit guide, the wolf, and basically gleening as much information as I can from being in Nature and learning of its ways. For instance, taking only what you need and being wary of taking too much from Nature is a high priority for me. Another biggy for me is the understanding that Nature shows us we are NOT the superior species, rather one of many equipped with thier own tools for survival. Thus, when all other forms of life become equally valid as your own, you take on a much more holistic and natural ethic. However, as humans, I feel a more human-oriented set of ethics can be very helpful and fulfilling, so long as they keep to heart to larger picture - Nature. So, for my actual set of ethics and values, I take what is a combination of similair principles from my Celtic Reconstructionist path and from the Asatru's Nine Noble Virtues, both very like systems that place honor, hospitality, personal responsibility, and courage - among many others - as the highest ethical traits. I find them to be very life-affirming, encouraging the very best of people, and in my own case, re-affirming my connection to the community and, on the larger scale, to Nature itself. |

Motivation for me can be any number of things. But mostly what kept me going on in life was curiosity. I had a tendency to wonder what would happen in the morrow. Curiosity even got me through a rather depressing period of my life, when I was tempted to end it. But nowadays I tend to merely exist. There is no perticular "driving force" in my life at the time being. I tend to take each moment as it comes along. Never dwelling on things past, or worrying about future events. When I was younger, I believed in the Wiccan Rede blindly. That was when I was beginning on the Path, everything I heard about Wicca I readily accepted. I did not learn it for myself, and blind faith is not a thing I would like to lead my life by. Later, when I found my Path was not Wicca but a worship of the ancient gods of Tamera, my ideology also changed. True, I still wish to do what is best for others. But evil is not always repaid, and justice is not always found. The world may be unjust, and this is because the gods are as human as we are, and they decide at times what may not be best. I will always remember what my dearest friend Raven told me. "To be divine is not perfection, and pefection cannot be found only in the divine. To be divine is to have control, and so not human may ever be divine, and yet with even the slightest compassion in our hearts we have attained perfection. It is for this that the unjust occurs, for as we envy and adore the gods they envy our lives upon Gaia." This is what I live by. I live knowing that, though I worship the great beauty of the old ones and look upon them with awe and wonder, they cannot give me all the answers. I am not their only follower. What of their other devotioners? Am I to think they will answer all my prayers, some that do not fit into the plan of fate, at the expense of ignoring all the rest? To think this would be selfish for me, so I do what I must for myself above all else. The gods will care for the rest. That quote above, I will always live by it. |

Believing that divinity is immanent within all things in nature, and thus humans, my motivation comes purely from knowing that all the strength and needs I have will be fulfilled by the Goddess and God within. I know it probably sounds cheesy, but this keeps me going because I fully believe in having personal responsibility and the fact that we ourselves can do alot towards "fixing" whatever problems we personally experience. I believe in the Wiccan Rede and especially the rule of three. Before I consider doing a spell I must consider if I will be able to accept the adverse or positive ramifications of messing with the universe. In spells, I acknowledge that I understand and accept the unforseeable consequenses of my actions. I keep spells as a last resort because they are powerful and should not be used lightly. And also if they are used incorrectly with no mind to the forces being called upon they can cause very bad things to happen. I believe spells are like fire; helpful, comforting, and healing, but also destructive if used unwisely and unwell. |
