Question of the Week: 98 - 2/10/2003

Would You Live In A Haunted House?

You have found the perfect house. But it’s haunted. Doors open and close. Lights flip on and off. Footsteps are heard in the hallway, furniture is rearranged and ghostly figures are spotted wandering the grounds.
Would you move in?
Would you be comfortable living with ghosts and/or paranormal activities? Or would you send the spirits an eviction notice?
What are your thoughts on paranormal manifestations?

If I had found a house I wanted, nothing could stop me from moving in, especially not a couple of spirits. I would be uncomfortable with it at first, but as long as I'm with my fiancee I wouldn't be worried. After all, most manifestations aren't annoying, let alone dangerous. My opinion is that spirits should be treated well, since they are just as worthy of respected as we are, they have only not been able to move on yet. They do exist, but one should be careful to not readily believe in every haunting case reported. A simple storm can cause more trouble than any spirit could.

This predominantly Pagan household already does live in a haunted house. There are 4 of us here and we have all encountered our unseen housemate on several occasions. Doors slamming in empty rooms, audible footsteps coming down the stairs, lights and other electrical appliances turning on/off, and the rare, brief glimpse of someone wandering through the house are almost commonplace here. My fiancee was a little "freaked" at first, but has warmed up to our friend. As for me, when it makes its presence known, I just choose to say "hello, how are you". It's actually quite fascinating, and not all that scary. As far as paranormal manifestations are concerned, obviously I am a believer. My sister has had a few visits from our late mother, some quite vivid and memorable. I had a very powerful experience a few years ago in a theater in New Jersey - while I was onstage, no less. As Hamlet said: "There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, Than are dream't of in our Philosophy."

Ghosts and aliens -- can't abide either one! They've always scared the pants off me, even as a child, and I'd run screaming like a cartoon character -- all the way to the horizon -- if I ever encountered one.

my best friend is a paranormal investigator. i'm not joking, he gets paid to take pictures of ghosts. i've gone with him a few times, and it's really interesting. my mother lived in a haunted house when she was younger. my family and a good part of my friend have a long history of having to deal with ghosts and the paranormal. i have tolerance for "weird" things, and i'm actually pretty used to them. would i live in a haunted house? i already have. nothing really big, i was the only one to see the ghosts. i was probably about seven or eight, i can't quite remember. anyway, some unusual stuff happened, i saw things that other people didn't. i wouldn't mind living in a haunted house again. where i live now is boring, at least my old house was interesting!

I wouldn't live in a house because it was haunted, but If I found out that there were spirits in my house, I would do what I could to help them pass to the next life (hold a ritual, burn sage, sweep, ect)

on the nature of the haunting. If it's peaceful, ok. If it's violent, no. I've only had experiences with peaceful spirits, the kind that maybe pull at your toe or walk around without bothering anyone, but I've never been around a violent spirit and do not want the experience!I've always wondered, however, how we can have ghosts if we reincarnate... I guess that it's just one of those things I'll have to learn over time. I understand spirits that were never people. Are they in a limbo type place? Are they waiting around so that they can pass on with someone into their next life? Anyone with ideas on this, let me know!!!

I've lived in several houses that were "active". In one house (in NY) we had an elder gentleman who loved to be the center of attention. Raymond -- the elder gentleman -- was extremely protective of me and liked to play tricks on any men who came to visit -- whether it was a friend or my boyfriend! He was a trickster. If I could have taken him with me when I moved, I would have.
In my younger days I lived in ahouse in MA that was inhabited by a young man in his late 20's. He loved to change the radio station from rock to big band. My little brother simply refused to go to the upstairs portion of the house because it felt "too spooky" (which is where our spirit dwelled) , and spent spent 2 years sleeping on the couch.
Even before that we lived in a house in CT -- not as active, but something there.
Now that I am in a new house -- constructed only 3 years ago, I am rather lonely without my active spirits. I have been sensitive to them my entire life --- it seems odd *not* having them around.
Of course, I won't discuss the most terrifying 2 years of my life -- from 1985-1987 -- that was a haunting that disturbs me til this day. Only three people know about it...and that's just fine with me. It's the stuff of bizarre fact that should only be fiction.

If I knew a house was haunted I'd buy it for simply that reason. Houses like that have strong energy. This summerI stayed in a haunted house, although the spirits weren't mean, they weren't exactly friendly either. I have this theory about spirits and maybe some of them stay because they're not done partying. I could live with them unless they were hostile, if they started hurting me or my family, they'd have to leave.

I want to live in a haunted house, so does my fiance, I have one rule though, no mean spirits. First time something gets thrown at my head, that ghost it gone! And no touching the tv when Buffy is on. In my house that will get the living and the dead banished fast! LOL! BB
