How Do You Feel About War?

‘Yes I'm talking about this war dance/ A patriotic romance./And I know all you poets/Have seen it all before…’ – Colin Moulding, XTC

Colin: ‘The words were originally prompted by the Falklands War in 1982. But it was too much on one piece of history. Then along came the Persian Gulf War and I put the revised lyrics to a new piece of music. It was time to bring war out of the closet again.’

And again, it would seem. How do you, from your own spiritual perspective or tradition, view and/or cope with the ideals and realities of war and armed conflict?

Do your political leanings influence how you feel?

Do you have a difficult time explaining/defending/advocating your position to other Pagans or Heathens? Non-Pagans?

I Don't Agree With War Jan 25th. at 7:22:05 pm UTC

kathy rodriguez (augusta, wv) Age: 31 - Email

i'ts hard to understand why our government sees fit to involve the U.S. in every skirmish that comes our way. i don't feel that we should be going to war over this. everything in our history seems to revert back to violence. i don't believe we should have ever gotten involved in any of this.

BlueTornado (WV, United States) Age: 18 - Email

It upsets me even when the smallest creature dies & i am anti-war & against violence of any kind. Although war & violence are embedded in the deepest roots of humankind's history, its about time that we learn for our mistakes. Don't go getting your rifle when you dont know what to say. Just because someone else gets their gun doesnt mean we have too. I think mothers from around the world said it best---"If one of your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?!"

We dont bash you for being capitalist pigs.
There are so many reasons to bash America we dont need to resort to that.
What annoys us is your superiority complex. The leaders of the free world.
You save the world in every movie. You show the world how they should be living, how your culture is so much better than ours. How could we not love you.
We dont benefit from any of your technology that im awhere of, but i could be wrong.
I do have some questions for you though.
who decided that your governemnt alone should be able to decide who leads another soverein nation?
Who decided that weapons of mass destruction should only be held by countires you approve of?
How do you judge the worhtiness of these counties?
Why did you give them to Israel?
Why do you think you can dictate policy to other countries ie attempts to issolate us for our anti nuclear stand and resistance to GE food.
How can you talk of removing a dictators when you have backed some of the most ruthless dictators in history, Pal Pot, Papa doc, to name a few?
How is it that for a country that says it defends the rights of the individual and has an advanced judical system, that those rights do not apply to foreigners, the Suspects held in Cuba and the forced labour held in Saipan?
Why if their is condeming evidence against Saddam do you not present this to the UN and have the world unitied against him?
You and Britian, and Australia stand alone, doesnt that tell you something?
Now if Im wrong about anything please correct me.
But if you think about it you can see why America is debased by so many people.
Having said that the people of your country that ive met seem to be very nice, so no i dont judge you all by your government.

...the Pretense Of Benevolence Jan 25th. at 10:47:01 pm UTC

MoonRose (Spokane) Age: 47 - Email

...would seem to be the official policy coming out of D.C. This blatant act of bullying aggression by GW and his warmongering political/corporate puppets (read politicians/CEO's) on the people of Iraq is nothing short of shameful for this country & every fine thing we have ever been about in the eyes of the world. What this administration is doing is an indecent waste of human lives and economic resources; resources that could otherwise be used to improve the lives of countless people here at home and elsewhere in the world.

The flip side of this dirty coin regards the men and women in our military, most of whom are doing what they do for honorable reasons. The universally stated purpose of their service is to DEFEND our country from aggressors. I wonder how many are wondering when the job description changed so drastically, or if they were given the choice to stay on the job or go look for another when GW decided to act like a despot instead of their commander-in-chief. We have the right to put these musings to paper or voice them to the world. Do they?

The first paragraph was a snapshot of my thoughts on this matter. The second was something about how I feel. I'm frightened about what Bush is doing, or rather failing to do, with his absence of diplomacy & mindfulness. For us. For the people in Iraq. For my son, who is in the Army, and has been in Kuwait since January 8th. May we all continually hope & pray that compassion and reason will prevail.

War... Jan 25th. at 10:49:31 pm UTC

Allegra (Michigan, USA) Age: 15 - Email

I'm in general not against war. War is a horrible thing, to be avoided at most costs. There comes a day though when enough is enough.
The US goverment is a bully. They're the kid on the play ground who will only be nice to you if you give them your lunch money. Not to get my wrong, our goverment has done quite a few good things, but always with some ulterior motive.
That's what scares me about this war. People I know and love are gonna die, over some petty fued. Chances are Saddams a goner any ways. Our constitutions being broken. (Are cival rights a thing of the past or some thing?) But hey, it will boost the economy. War always does...

The horse is dead, you can stop beating it now.

Does It Really Matter How I Feel? Jan 25th. at 11:01:50 pm UTC

Janet (Virginia) Age: 39 - Email

One needs to ask oneself if it really matters how we feel about war. In my opinion, no matter how much we protest, argue, fight, sign petitions, talk to congressmen, and so on, the government does exactly what they want to. For instance the Vietnam, can anyone explain to me why we had to stick our nose into that one? I've asked politians, teachers, and the like, and no one has yet gave me a good reason for it. Bush is going to do exactly what he wants no matter how much we speak against it. It ceases to amaze me how power hungry and corrupt all the world governments are. It's not their family that goes out and gets killed, it is the ones who are just doing their job. To me, we are at war everyday, all the time, nationally and globally when you have children starving and dying from disease, families living in the streets, destruction of our natural resources, violence among families and others, and so many other things, it's hard enough just to live day to day. I am an old soul who has grown so weary of all the fighting, poverty, prejudice, hatred, greed, killing, hunger, and so on. The governments are not going to stop their little games, because that is all it is to them pure and simple. What am I doing? Teaching my children and others who are around me to stop being negative, help those who are in need, try to make the world a better place, and I'm involved in conservation and environmental organizations. But if we all could just try a little harder, maybe one day everyone will have enough and the government will change, but I seriously think it won't be in my life time. Blessings, love, and light to all.

War: The Last Resort Jan 26th. at 12:42:35 am UTC

J Fisher (Chicagoland, IL) Age: 42 - Email

I have my own thoughts with regard to the looming prospect of war with Iraq. What I think people in general forget is that this is not about destroying the Iraqi people nor is the "War on Terrorism" about the destruction of Islam. You can take that at face value...to do otherwise is just conspiracy theorist nonsense.

I really believe that war is a necessary last resort...I say LAST RESORT because people will die and that is never good. No one can see the outcome of any one person dying prematurely. The old saying of "if you kill one bug, you've killed a million" is certainly true. Human beings are not bugs by any stretch of the imagination, of course, but you understand what I am getting at. (Here comes the "but"...)

,BUT...Human death machines like Saddam Hussein are a cancer on this planet. What do you suppose the outcome would have been if the free peoples of the Earth had not stood up and destroyed the last human death machine called Adolph Hitler? Saddam Hussein is far worse because of the technological advances at his disposal! He could make Hitler seem like an amateur. I am sorry but anyone who can sanction the notion of sending children and teenagers out with explosives tied to their bodies out to kill others and other children in the name of the god they worship is Evil Incarnate. It is not the religion that is broken, nay, rather, it is the MEN who interpret it who are twisted and broken. These men are the cancer and it needs to be excised from the body. Saddam Hussein also supports terrorism...for that reason alone he should be gone. The issue of "weapons of mass destruction", or "WMD", just adds fuel to the fire.

Ask yourself this: should the USA wait until a US city like New York or Los Angeles is destroyed by nuclear fire before we act to remove lunatics like this? Do you feel that the USA deserves to lose two cities to nuclear destruction as payment of some perceived "sin" in Japan some 60 years ago? I submit that that notion is ludicrase and down right treasonous. Get a grip, folks, get behind the President and our troops and let's end this.

Win It Fast Jan 26th. at 12:48:22 am UTC

LadyWolf (Washington Co., PA) Age: 51 - Email

I was an Army wife and mother for 30 years. I followed my husband all over the world and raised my 4 daughters, 2 of whom are veterans of the Gulf. I have seen first hand how most third world nations hate us and envy us. They want what we have but don't want to work for it as we and our ancestors had to. The most hated and envied Americans are American women. Yes, I hate war, but if we must go again we must fight to win and with the kind of leadership we have it won't be easy. Our leadership is all hot air. Our leadership doesn't know how to win a war. Before we go to war it should already be won. I would rather see us fight for oil than fight needlessly to prop up some fat, loud mouthed dictator who victimizes his own people so that he and his buddies can live high on the hog. Before sending our boys and girls off to fight, their flanks should be secured. By that I mean deport all who are potential spies and saboteurs, regardless of their race or gender. What makes you think that they won't do what they can to help their people and hinder our ? Most of them are here for material wealth, not to support democracy. Every city, town and village and township should form local militia groups to cover for us here while the regulars and the National Guard and the reserves troops are over there. Militias can be made up of all us who are unfit to go, but we old and young folks can cover for them till they win and come back home. I think they should bring back the draft so all you who bad mouth this country can experience first hand also how certain religious cults hate us. When you get up morning after morning and flip that switch and get no juice or hot water, you'll be glad to go.

All Wars Are Rediculous Jan 26th. at 1:15:20 am UTC

I think war is completely assinine, especially since we have an ulterior motive in attacking Iraq. It really doesn't matter what any of us may think. The reptile snakes are in charge. May heaven help us!!!

Right.......... Jan 26th. at 1:20:35 am UTC

diesel (washington) Age: 46 - Email

yes and maybe the canadians could send that love down with some of the thousands of their citizens that are pouring into the u.s. for medical care.
i appreciate different views...and even though i am an american i do know that canadians have the right to feel the way they do as a nation, as do we.
but, come on..isn't it a little silly to blame 'sex and the city 'for making your country a worse place? oh brother.....that really is a stretch. turn off the telly.
and new zealand doesn't use our technology??????????
hey....do you see the glowing box right in front of you?
but does that make us better? absolutely not. do we think it does? absolutely not.
i am a little tired of the world interpreting america and americans.you can look at our actions...but how many countless thousands of decisions and reasons go into every one? there are reasons none of us will ever know about. i always figured that's why every american president ages about ten years in his first year of office. i'm pretty sure that i wouldn't be able to sleep either if i knew what he knew.
first all of you call us busy body bullies that are in your business too much. then you whine that we don't know anything about your country, aren't giving you enough attention. which is it?
there are alot of instances where we, as a nation, have done incredibly stupid things. abandoning korea really comes to mind. look at your history..it's a heartbreaking thing.
but haven't all counties done things they shouldn't have? does not make it okay......but it doesn't make you wrong forever either.
we all have to try and go forward and improve EVERYONE'S quality of life.
can you name a country that is as fast to respond to a disaster as america?
i agree with new zealand's stance on GE foods and nuclear weapons........but you can also call it isolationist, can't you?[and pretty naive..that genie is out of the bottle....] sure you are hurting anyone, but are you helping anyone but yourselves either? and isn't that what you are accusing us big bad americans of?hmmmmm?
canada......also harmless.but what do you do for others in the world?
it is apples and oranges. we are all very different. the world is not a homogenized 'we are one people' place. and i hope it never is. think of how many wonderful cultures would be lost.
and that's where i do disagree with my government.just because something is different doesn't make it wrong.[it rather amuses me that the very thing all of you accuse the american government of doing....well....you do it yourselves when judging america, don't you? we are cowboys, etc. ad nauseum]
when my sister was very young, my mother came home and told a horrific story about seeing a man's hands being chopped off. for stealing. she was ,of course, very upset. this was in libya.our housekeeper was refilling the buckets of kerosene that the bed legs stood in [to keep the scorpions from getting into bed with you] at the time. and she just mildly said "oh well......he DID steal didn't he?"
my mother said that was not the point.to which the housekeeper said "don't you do this to people in your country when they steal? " she was surprised to learn that we didn't.
different cultures.....very different.
