Question of the Week: 98 - 2/10/2003

Would You Live In A Haunted House?

You have found the perfect house. But it’s haunted. Doors open and close. Lights flip on and off. Footsteps are heard in the hallway, furniture is rearranged and ghostly figures are spotted wandering the grounds.
Would you move in?
Would you be comfortable living with ghosts and/or paranormal activities? Or would you send the spirits an eviction notice?
What are your thoughts on paranormal manifestations?

| Um Yeah, I Have And It Wasn't Always "fun" | Feb 15th. at 11:06:16 pm EST |

My godparents bought an old house when I was 15. At age 18-22 I lived there (going to university) and I have subsequently housesat for them about a month each year. As a teen, it was little things, too little to mention. Once I moved in? I would be awakened by breath on my face (day or night) . On the up side, a lot of the time it was moments before I should wake up. On the down side, it was also at pretty much anytime. My bedroom door wouldn't stay closed. You would click it shut (you'ld hear it "latch") . Look up again? Yes, it's moving and opening. There was the knocking in the walls too. Most often right as I was trying to fall asleep -- whatever the hour, I was a college student. You could cease this by saying aloud, "Yes, enough already, I know you're there!"
Then there's the furniture-moving, appliances skidding across the kitchen counters, lights coming off and on repeatedly during the night...the weird "static" at the foot of the bed?
Just not fun. I had one friend mention maybe "what with all the 'waking?'" there was something "they" were trying to get me to see/ wake up to. No fooling! Well, I did my best to move things on and such but I'm from a family tradition of shamanism...not Wiccan. Perhaps I don't know all the new-fangled tricks but the best I could get was "quiet." Lights were still a problem.
My godparents are devout Catholic & I've never mentioned anything to them (I thought they'd freak) . Although getting ready to retire, they just built a new house and this month sold The House. I heard a family friend asking them why. My godmother said, "I don't ever want to live in a house where others lived and died, " HMMMM! They knew something too, n'est ce pas?

| I've Lived In Two So Far... | Feb 16th. at 1:18:39 am EST |

but i'd have to think about living in another one after the things my wife and I have experienced in our current house. The first one I lived in was when I was a young child. Nothing to remarkable, just the odd visitation in the middle of the night and the constant sound of someone walking up and down the stairs. Nothing malevolent occured then. This house we are living in now is a mess of spiritual activity. We live in a very remote area and the house is about 40 years old. It took me forever to find this house and I thought it was the ideal place, you can see every star in the sky at night, no light pollution, no air pollution and only one neighbor that isn't very close. When I first saw this place I thought it was everything we had been looking for; then we moved in.
The activity started almost immediately. Doors opening and closing, things disappearing, strange noises at all hours. Even my dogs don't like this place, my cats are constantly chasing and fighting with things my wife and I can't see. Sometimes one of them will just sit and stare at a corner of a room, there is never anything visible. It's creepy, I loved the place when I first saw it but I have to say I've never been absolutely comfortable here. It's like there is always something hanging just over my shoulder. My wife has had several serious accidents, I finally felt I had to do something about it when she told me she was pushed down the stairs, spiral stairs no less. My wife is not a clumsy person and she is not prone to overreaction either. I did a cleansing ritual and I continue to do them, usually under the full moon. Every time there is a full moon. It has helped but some activity still continues. My wife hasn't had any more accidents and she hasn't been pushed down the stairs since I started the regular cleansings, however doors still open and close and there is still a presence in the house. I don't mind the presence so much as it's mischief. If it's willing to live with us in peace then I don't want to drive it from it's home, and so far it seems we've come to an uneasy truce. Here is my advice. If you find a house that has had MANY owners, none of which stays very long or if your ideal house has been uninhabited for an extended period, FIND OUT WHY. We found out the hard way.

| Yes, I Would. | Feb 16th. at 2:24:25 am EST |

I would love to live in a haunted house. If one understands where the spirits are coming from then I feel no need to be afraid. However, it would not be pleasant if a spirit were hostile. But the hostile ones are confused and angry and who wouldn't be. I would be pretty pissed if I was stuck with unfinished business. I feel that we share our homes with spirits every day. We are just too busy with our own lives, paying bills, school work and social meetings.

Is there actually ever a better link to the past than someone who only remembers it? Contacting would be half the fun in itself. If he gets unruly... lay down the law or stick him in a bottle.

I currently work in a place that is haunted, and for a while it wasn't so bad. The spirits only harass me and only when I'm there alone. However, for whatever reason, they have recently become violent. There have been several large metal objects thrown from acrosss the room, and barely missed my head. I was almost pushed down several flights of stairs when no one was in the building, and breaker boxes open and slam themselves shut all the time. I don't mind being harassed by people, because at least I can defend myself or avoid them, but to willingly put myself in a situation that will allow the spirits to harass me is absurd.

I think it would depend on the ghosts. If they were violent I wouldn't, but if they weren't bothering anyone I probably wouldn't make a big deal out of it. I would probably take steps to help them move on though...

| Would I Live In A Haunted House... | Feb 16th. at 8:39:26 am EST |

Would i live in a haunted house? The answer is yes. Its a great way of finding out about the past of your area and your house. Of course, i dont need to read books or visit people to find this out, my house IS haunted. My mom has seen a man standing in the doorway of her old bedroom, and i've heard footsteps and voices outside my door. I've seen cildren playing in the garden outside my window, and one of them was burying something in the ground. i went outside to that area, and dug up the smashed remains of a dolls tea set. Of course, its mainly the older houses that are haunted. My house is from 1500, and there have been houses on this site for ages. I'm going to stop now for fear of rambling. if anyone wants to contact me, thats fine. C ya! Shayla*** Link to More info related to this post -- HERE

Yes, I most definitely would let them stay unless they became violent in any way. Then they would be handed their walking papers. About 10 years ago, I lived in a house with a resident ghosty. Nothing bad happened. Lights flicked on and off, we had a dimmer switch in the dining room that would go nuts, the toilte would flush itself, doors would open and close, and a unicorn figurine of mine would get moved constantly. It always seemed very friendly and in no way threatening. I actually liked it. *smiles*

My dream house is a centuries-old victorian or farm house (not too hard to find here in New England!) , complete with a charming, benevolent guest or two. =)
